Just like that… by Luckynumba7
He slid his hands into the deep pockets of his jeans as his eyes skimmed over the 'For Sale' sign that was lying on the lawn. She had done it. She moved. Looking up at the dark, deserted house his heart still wouldn't believe. She wouldn't leave him. No. She couldn't. She was the love of his life. They were supposed to get married. Raise four kids together…
And live happily ever after…
Guess that only happens in fairy tales doesn't it? He kicked the white picket fence angrily. The flimsy, rotten board broke into pieces and fell at his feet. It was kind of like their relationship. It used to be so pure, so beautiful. Then, suddenly, one thing happens and it's shattered. Gone. Kaput. Everything that he had ever dreamed of gone in one small moment.
Finally the reality of the situation hit him. All of the anger he had been feeling turned into pain and heartbreak. Tears stung his eyes, threatening to fall. Opening the white picket fence, he walked slowly up the concrete path that was lined with beautiful tulips. Each step he took brought back a memory.
Their first meeting when she had accidentally ran into him at the park …
Picking her up on their first date…
Their first kiss on the porch swing…
Every memory felt like a salt being poured into an open wound. Each one hurt worse then the one before.
When he reached the top of the steps he ran his hands over the door. There was the crack in the door from when her older brother had thought that he was an intruder and had thrown him into the door. He rubbed the back of his head gently. There was still a small bump back there even though that had happened about two months ago.
He opened the door hesitantly and peeked around the corner. Instead of being greeted with the usual sight of coats and shoes and backpacks in the entry way, he was greeted with emptiness. The pictures of the family were gone, the closet was open but bare inside. The only thing in the room was a picture that had been torn, lying on the floor. Hesitantly he walked over and picked it up.
It was a picture of the two of them… Her favorite…
The tears that he had tried so hard to block ran down his face like small rivers. He felt his heart finally give out and break. He couldn't take it anymore. He fell to the floor sobbing as he let the picture drop from his hand.
"I love you so much Denise… Why'd you leave me?" He sobbed. He never knew what happened. Yesterday she told him it was over. He hadn't believed her… Then he came today to make sure she wasn't serious and she was gone…Just like that…
