People think that silence is sitting outside with birds chirping and cats playing. That's not silence, that's comfort. Silence is sitting on your bed in the middle of the night with your knees pressed to your chest, rocking back and forth, waiting for the sound to come. No radio, no television, just you and the darkness. This has been my life for years. The silence is scarier than anything else in the world. Now, because of these soundless nights, anytime I am in the car without the radio, or someone talking, I will start humming until someone turns the radio on. I get so scared, and I can't handle it. That is silence. So next time you're sitting in the sun on a warm spring day, don't think of it as silence, think of it as sanctuary.
