New York City
Caroline let the angry tear slide down her cheek. Her blue eyes looked into her husbands green ones. Husband. Not for long. She clenched and unclenched her hands.
"How could you do this?" she said through gritted teeth.
"I fell in love." he replied.
"Fell in love? What a load of shit!" she yelled.
"Caroline! Dont wake up the kids!" he replied.
"Daniel! You obviously dont care about them!" she threw back.
"Look Im going to move out. The divorce papers will arrive soon." he said and walked away.
Caroline watched him go. She closed her eyes and turned around. She leaned against the kitchen counter of thier four bedroom apartment and slammed her fist down. "Damn him." she whispered.
Caroline and Daniel had ben married since she was 22. They had met when she began editing for Love Magazine. They fell in love and quickly got married. They had three children and even a dog.
"Mommie?" a little voice asked.
Caroline turned and saw her 5 year old son Micheal poking his head into the kitchen.
"Morning sweetheart." she said with a smile.
She looked over at the clock and realized that it was only the beginning of the day. She wiped her eyes and went over to Micheal. "Mommie is going to fix breakfast and I want you to go wake up Leah and Caleb ok?" she replied.
"Ok mommie." he smiled and ran off.
She poured some ceral aand glasses of orange juice and heard the pitter patter of feet coming into the kitchen, her eldest Leah, leadirnng the pack.
Leah was 11 and looked just like Caroline already. She had dark auburn hair and bright blue eyes. She had big dimples and a perfect little face. Caleb was 8 and resemble Daniel. As did Micheal. They both had his green eyes and shaggy black hair.
They all sat on the stools arounf the little eat in island and began chowing down. Caroline poured herself a cup of cofee and sat down. She waited for them to finish eating then bustled them back to their rooms to get ready for school.
It seemed like everything she did was in slow motion. She sat back down and burried her face in her hands. She had never felt so weak in her whole entire life. She refused to let this get to her.
She lost track of time and heard the pitter patter of little feet in the kitchen again. She got up and headed to the front door. "Ok guys lets go!" she yelled.
Leah came running down the stairs first, followed by Caleb, and then Micheal. She wrapped them up in scarfs and coats and pulled on her own coat and scarf. She set the alarm and closed the door.
It was a cold, depressing New York day. She pulled the car keys from her purse and unlocked the her silver Lincoln Navigator. They all climbed in and she pulled into the hustle and bustle of the street.
Caroline walked through the main lobby and into the elevator. Her personal assistant and best friend Amanda Micheals was already standing there with a cup of Starbucks coffee in her hand.
Caroline took it as Amanda began reading off her list of things to do today.
"Call my lawyer." Caroline interrupted.
Amanda stopped and looked up at her. "Why?" she asked.
"We are through. He told me this morning." Caroline replied quietly.
"Oh, Caroline I am so sorry." Amanda said putting a hand on her shoulder.
"Its ok really. I guess I am a little shocked."
"I understand. How about I clear a few things off for you to have some freetime?"
"No. I cant let him think that he affected me. Thats what he wants. I will be fine." Caroline said thrusting her chin into the air as the elevator stopped at the 13th floor.
She walked out, Amanda behind her and through the corridors to her office. She walked in and took a seat, depositing her briefcase and purse on the desk.
A few moments later Amanda buzzed through the speaker phone. "Ma'am, your husbands lawyer is on the phone."
Caroline picked up the phone. "Hello."
"Mrs. Wakefield, I am Charles McNerman, your hubands lawyer. I wante to tell you that your husband will be fighting for custody of the children. So I suggest that you get a lawyer. Have a good day." he said and hung up the phone.
Caroline slammed the phone back in its cradle. "Amanda get my lawyer now!" she roared.
She looked over at a picture of she, Daniel and the kids on their vacation to Disney World last summer. "Ove my dead body will he get my children." she said gritting her teeth.
