He held her in his arms. Silently crying, and slowly rocking. He wondered why she had done this for him. Taken the bullet meant for him only. She loved him that was why. She wasn't afraid anymore. She had always hidden behind someone or something. Always an excuse for everything. But now, the only reason was love.
He was three years older than her, supposedly able to take care of himself. Not this time. He thought he had dug his own grave. Now he realized that ever since the beginning, he was digging hers. The stealing, the lying, the crimes, and the stupidity. All that brought him to this minute. He could have avoided the whole thing. Made sure he wasn't being followed. Made sure she was home. Not even associating with these people would have helped, but she would have died in the end.
"Don't die on me. I've called the hospital. They're on their way." He pleaded with her.
"Do you think that will really help anything. We both know that I was going to go eventually. You just sped things up a bit. Just remember." She winced in pain, the pain in her chest from the bullet and the thought of leaving him behind in this world. Where no one would understand him as she did.
"Remember what?" His voice crept down to a whisper. His hand slowly twining itself in her hair. He wanted to remember it. To memorize it, because this would be the last time it would be full of spirit like her actions just minutes before.
"To dream. To live. To love. To never forget." Her breath was coming in hard now. Her fiery eyes showed the last of her strength giving away so she could tell him the last part of her needs.
"Shhh. Save your energy." He was suddenly cut off.
"To never forget that I am always here for you. I will always love you. The day the sun destroys all that we know. I will love you. The day that the moon falls and the Earth opens up I will love you. My friend. My love. My brother. I will love you." She died saying those last words.
He could hear the sirens outside the building now. He tucked his head into her hair. "And I will and have always loved you my sister."
