Once upon a work-filled night, at my desk I sat with fright
Gazing upon the mountains and piles; homework, late work due before
My heart pounded, sounded in the empty, fleeting, calm-lit night
Pages flipping, chapters skipping, over notes to learn yet more
Facts passed in one ear, out the other; pity the teacher's such a bore.
Fearing, "You've failed again once more."
Ah, then distinctly I remember, it's just after the month December
We are called to act and sing and dance upon that wooden floor
Eagerly I stalled the marrow - vainly I'd forgotten to borrow
The last audition packet, for tomorrow, from the holder again once more.
Stuck again in chorus - chorus for me I was sure.
Nameless here for evermore.
Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer
"Dear God!" cried I, "Please listen, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, while the teacher hence was snapping
Then so gently I went tapping, tapping at the tutor's door
See - I tried; it's not my fault!" - here I concluded my implore; -
Darkness there and nothing more.
And then I, never flitting; still am sitting, still am sitting,
Sitting just inside that wretched classroom door
The teacher's eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming
Finals long since haven't made him want to sink into the floor
I won't sink, but my grades will, right into the cement floor
To be lifted - nevermore.
