A Real Prince
Disney World is a magical place. This isn't an opinion, it's a fact. And being one of the many people who make kid's dreams come true is one of the best jobs in the world.
My name is Lindsay Nathan and I've been fascinated with the story of Cinderella for as long as I can remember. When I was six, I did chores around the house for weeks until my mom told me that there weren't any princes in America, therefore, no one to save me from my misery.
Now, a twenty-two, I'm just an overgrown kid pretending to be a fairy tale character. Of course, so Is Justin Chapman, my prince, so to say. He's twenty-four, and we've been working together for almost a year.
I never could have predicted that this day would change my life. It was mid-July, and absolutely sweltering outside. There was a two-hour wait in line to meet Cinderella, me. I had chatted with hundreds of little boys and girls that day, but it was one skinny little girl who set everything in motion.
"My name is Brittany,"she announced as I signed her Minnie Mouse autograph book."Do you like scary rides, Cinderella?"she asked.
"You bet,"I told her as I handed the book to Justin.
"Have you ever been on space mountain?"She stared up at me with her big blue eyes. I noticed the freckles covering her face as she gave me a mischievous look, as if she expected me to be a wimp.
Sadly, I had to disappoint her."Dozens of times. I love that one."I smiled.
"Wow."Her eyes widened."You must be really brave, Cinderella. I couldn't even go on it once 'cause you have to be forty-two inches and I'm only forty-one."
"Dozens of times,"Justin repeated with a thoughtful look on his face.
"Uh-huh."I nodded, wondering why he looked like that. I soon found out.
"I challenge you to go on Space Mountain with me and not scream."He grinned devilishly.
I sighed."Is this really necessary?"
"What do you guys think?"Justin asked the long line of two to ten year olds."Do you think Cinderella should go on Space Mountain with me?"
"Yeah!"was the unanimous shout.
What could I do? Clearly I was outnumbered."All right, Mr. Big Shot Prince, I accept your challenge. You meet me at six PM today outside Space Mountain. And all of you,"I motioned to the line of kids,"can come back tomorrow and hear how he screamed like a baby and I was fine."
Around six-thirty, I began to wonder if Justin would really show. At seven, I gave up and was on my way to catch a bus home when Snow White (aka my friend Sara) ran up to me.
Out of breath, she managed to tell me that Justin asked her to give me this. "This" was a folded up piece of paper.
I unfolded it and it said the following:
Lindsay- I'm so sorry, but they needed an Eric for the Little Mermaid thing they were doing tonight because the poor guy got the flu. If you're not too mad, meet me tonight at ten in front of Cinderella's castle. I promise I'll show this time. ~Justin
I looked up at Snow White who gave me a weak smile. I shrugged my shoulders. Why not? All I'd lose was a couple of hours.
As I paced in front of Cinderella's castle that night, one part of my brain screamed that he wasn't going to come while the other part told me to just be patient, which by the way isn't my best quality.
I didn't even know why I was so suddenly nervous. What did it matter if he showed or not? I'd still see him at work tomorrow.
Then there he was.
He was wearing baggy jeans and a white T-shirt that was painted to look like a tuxedo and was carrying a single red rose.
"Hey, Lindsay."He smiled and handed me the rose.
I took the rose from him, noticing that my hand was trembling."Hey, Justin,"I mumbled.
He took a deep breath."I'm not sure how to say this except to just say it. Lindsay, I really like you. I've liked you for a little while now. I love the way you are with little kids and, if it's okay with you, I'd like to be your prince."
My mouth dropped open, but then, regaining my composure, I leaned in and kissed him softly on the lips as my answer.
As the fireworks exploded all around us I thought, maybe my mom was wrong. There are princes in America. They just don't wear crowns. At least not real ones.
