It was a beautiful and clear night. In the sky, millions of stars twinkled and shone, unseen by the sleeping inhabitants of the peaceful city below. There was a cool breeze blowing, making the hot summer heat just bearable. Standing at the top of a hill overlooking her hometown, Allyson Evans could see for miles. She closed her eyes and lifted her face up to the skies, feeling the gentle breeze caress her face as she slowly let go of everything on her mind. A smile slowly tugged at the corners of her lips and she opened her eyes, looking up. In the distance, she could see the moon, shining brightly. She could just barely make out the features of the 'man on the moon' and she let out a soft chuckle, remembering her childhood days when her mother told her the tale of the man who supposedly lived on the moon. Now, she was nearing sixteen and tomorrow she would begin the first day of her Grade 11 year at Eastwood High. With a sigh, she crumpled to her feet and looked out over the edge again. It seemed as though everyone was asleep. Drawing her knees close to her chest, she closed her eyes again and listened to the sounds of the night. She smiled as she listened to the crickets in the tall grass nearby and the soft whooshing sound of the leaves swaying gently in the breeze above her. Another summer had flown by, in a mix of pool parties and dates. Now, she was about to begin the most important two years of her high school career. Although her junior year was about to begin, she wasn't quite ready for it just yet. She didn't want to let go of the carefree days that seemed to have flown by in a blink of the eye but it seemed as though she had no choice. Grade 11 loomed majestically in front of her, almost threateningly. With a long sigh, she got to her feet and gathered her belongings. She stuffed them hurriedly into her small backpack and then turned to leave. She hadn't even walked two meters when she turned around and gazed at the spot she recently vacated. The trees around the area beckoned to her invitingly and she was so tempted to stay, but knew she couldn't. It was well past midnight and her parents would be wondering where she'd gone. With one last sweeping glance, she turned and headed towards home.
