Chapter Three: Monster News

Lying in her big comfortable bed, Nia couldn't get to sleep. Please let this be a dream. Please! She pinched her arm. "Ouch! This is real," she said to herself. Rubbing her arm, she got up, got dressed, and left the room. Now it's time for some exploring, she thought.

She walked down the stairs and into the lobby. There was a huge commotion. People were gathered around something. Nia walked closer and pushed her way through some people for a better look. What she saw was on unconscious man bleeding on the floor.

"If you had walked out the door –the one where you were so eager to walk out of earlier-then you would be just like him," a voice said behind her, causing her to jump.

She easily recognized the voice as Orin's. Who else would sneak up behind me?

"You're just trying to scare me." Nia said. She turned to look at him. He looked serious. Nia gulped. "What do you mean?"

"There is a monster outside the lobby door. Go deep into the desert and you just might be lucky enough to meet him," Orin said nonchalantly. "He's lucky though. Someone saw him go through the door and quickly warned us."

A monster…. "Kind of like Beetle juice," said Nia.

Orin raised his eyebrow. "Beetle juice?"

"Yeah," replied Nia. "The ghosts couldn't walk out of their house, but if they did, they too were in a desert. There were these huge scary looking worm thingies."

"Interesting," Orin said, though he didn't sound very interested at all. "But our monster is not a worm…"

"What is it?" asked Nia hurriedly.

"I was about to explain, but you interrupted me-"

"Sorry."

"Nia," Orin said exhaustedly, "Shut up." She stuck her tongue out at him, and he gave a small smile at her childish antics. "Nobody knows what the monster looks like. There were no survivors to tell."

"Oh," said Nia.

Orin shrugged. "Anyways, you should get back to bed. Night." He then walked away from her.

"Night," she said and started walking back to her room. I'm going to have a hard time sleeping tonight. Going through that door was the only escape I had, but now I can't. I don't want to die…die.
