Little Girl Little Girl
Across time, Across plains
Your purity is there making you live
So naïve, so innocent, abused by tainted blows
Alla sat on the steps in a boredom spell. Out side of her trailer she had live for two years of her life after moving out of the state she use to live in. She recalled finishing first grade here, leaving kids her age to meet new ones down here. Standing up and straightening the spandex her mother, Beth loved to put her in; she walked barefoot unto the Earth. She tip toed on the ground and looked at the dirt.. At the base of the tree were three colored stones, where three Kittens she loved dearly died. And over to the root next to her trailer was the choke chain still rusted slightly in blood that held her father's favorite dog whom was let free on accident and ran over on the high way not 100 feet away. She remembered Second grade, how fun it was even though she wasn't accustomed to changing classes just to learn math from the teacher next door.
The black cat she had as a pet when most the other animals died or lost themselves came strutting up to her. She sat down and cuddled him. He began to paw her neck and suckle her ear. She sighed because she knew the reason why he did it was because he wasn't raised properly like other cats.. She felt so much like him; yet she had to leave him behind for the place they were moving too didn't allow pets. Alla squeezed the cat a little harder wanting to cry, she never really had any friends except for the cats that lived with her and now she wouldn't have them any more. Then she pulled him off her ear and looked at him, he was so beautiful. Tracing her thumb over the moon shaped white spot on his chest that gave him his name she hugged the cat again and set him down. "Midnight I am going to miss ya the most" She forced a smile down at the kitty and walked inside where most the boxes had been picked up. Only a few boxes remained as well as some trash bags.
"Mommy?" She called out. "In here Honey" She tip toed into the back room. Walking down the hall she recalled the many times she had been hit, smacked and yelled at. She came into the back bedroom at the very end and saw her mom rummaging through a denim side tote. "What's that mommy?" She saw her mom pull out what looked like a scary blind fold "Just something used for pleasure dear.." Alla shuddered for even though she was 8 she knew what it was. She hated the thought of Sex.. She hated it all. Her mother smiled perversely, it was better then her being angry, Alla Thought. "Well When daddy comes back we will load the rest of this up and go to our apartment." Alla nodded and waited for her mother to leave before she snuck over and grabbed the weird blindfold, throwing it into a bag that she was taking to the dumpster.
She grabbed the bag and trotted to the dumpster, throwing it away she held a grin as if she had done something naughty. Coming back her mom grabbed her arm "Why did you throw it away!?" Her look angry again, angry like a few days ago when she threw the eating utensils at her. "I- I- I though it was trash! I'm sorry!" Beth Let go and let her lip curl. Before she could say anything her father had walked through the door. "OK Lets get the last few boxes and we are out of this pop corn stand" Beth let go and forgot about it.. Just smiling. "Ok Dear, c'mon Alla." Alla followed into the car and then her father started it up and they were off five miles away and to the Apartment.
Ah the apartments. What memories and terrors they held for dear Alla. A place where her mother spoke unspeakable words that scared her. Unexplainable actions that scarred her to the point where she would cry in her third grade asking if she could stay in school, her mommy was mad and she didn't want to go home to mommy. How alone she was in that white apartment of cold tile.. No matter what happened in there it was never a home. She remembered many times when she was pained, and in tears. She recalls trying to cheer her mommy up with "I love you Mommy." Only to meet those angry eyes of her mother, the screams that seemed only to echo on the cold, hard walls. She remembers Beth causing her pain, feeling like she couldn't breathe, and sometimes intense hotness.
Remembering when father came home one time, about to go out again, but instead she escaped the room her mother kept her in and pleaded with tears in her eyes for Daddy to stay. He wanted to leave, to go out drink some beer, have some fun with his friends and fix up a situation; but he couldn't. The little fair child that cried tugging on his t-shirt pleaded for him to stay, and for one of the few times, he did stay. Then the unspeakable happened. A chance. A chance, for Alla to be free. She loved her mother she really did. Her mother was always there while her father would escape and go out sometimes seeming to not care he had a scared little girl at home. Beth was always there, told her everything she thought she should know about the world. Even though Beth was so hurtful a lot of times.. Alla felt she needed her mother; but her father was going to make an attempt to be her only parent. Alla loved her father too but being only a naïve girl was easily swayed by either parent to think the other was bad.
Now, her father was holding her while mommy was away and telling her they could start a new happy life without anymore unnecessary pain. Her Father was planning to take his little girl away and live in a different state again; he was aware of some of what was going on and decided it was time to go. He already knew that his long term girlfriend Beth was pregnant with another man's child, even though Alla didn't quite understand that she knew it too.. just never spoke of it. He told his daughter that within a few days he will come and get her from school, he will have everything packed up. That's when they will leave the state… without Beth. Alla was joyed and the next day school started its week. She played at the playground and the teachers knew she must have been happy about something. "Why Alla? What has gotten you so cheerful today?" Her third grade teacher asked. Alla Stopped her swing and stepped out. "Today… is a pretty day isn't it?" She asked back with a childish innocent smile. The teacher looked at the girl for a moment un-phased by the cuteness but in turn her nodded and replied "Yes it is a pretty day Alla" Alla jumped up and landed almost bowing to the teacher and ran off in a hyper child-like way to the slide on the other end of the yard.
The next day however was different. She came to school, still happy. Finishing all her work on time, actually speaking in the class. Then, the teacher got a phonecall. Alla looked at the teacher then to the televised Clock in the corner. "Alla?" Her head snapped instantly in her teacher's direction "Yessum?" The teacher listened to the speaker and replied to Alla "Did you try to call your mother today" Confused Alla looked around and said "No" Teacher looked at her again "Are you sure?" Alla nodded "Yes Miss I don't even know schools had phones except what the teachers have" The teacher answered the called and hung up. For the rest of the day that thought plagued her. Coming home she found Beth. Alla had to ask and since her mother was being sweet and loving almost warm to her daughter Alla asked. Beth looked at her daughter perplexed 'What?" Alla sighed and explained what happened in school that day. In return to explaining her mother thought for a moment and said "Lets go to the payphones I'll call the school"
For some reason those words made her heart jump. Leaving the apartment with Beth they traveled through the mass buildings and found the payphones near the mailboxes. Beth slipped some coins in and dialed the number. Alla swing from the Metal mailboxes and then heard "What!? She is my daughter! What do you mean He tried that!? I am not letting anyone take her away from me!" Alla fell down off the concrete platform that secured the boxes and into the grass. "no.." She said in a faint voice. She stood up and used her secret weapon of not understanding the situation "Mommy?" She walked towards her mother, who looked as if she had been in a wreck. She was almost crying and she said "Thank you so much" Then Hung up. "Your father was going to take you away.. He was going to pick you up today after school and drive away.. he had gotten all you papers.. and was going to take you ..away" Beth embraced the little girl. By instinct Alla wrapped her little arms as best she could and listened to her mom blubber utter nonsense. ~No why did they have to tell mommy!~ She looked at the ground and felt it. Her mother's child kick her. ~What trouble you are going to go through child.. Even when mommy hurts me she even tries to hurt you.. She cuts her stomach and blames me.. She punches her tummy trying to get you.. And she even tries to starve herself to kill you.. You're lucky though, you know? You will get away.. Two rich people are going to take you as soon as you're born. You will have a better life than mine.. And.. you won't have to be afraid and alone like I am.. ..~ She felt her mother squeeze tighter and say "Not if I take you first! Alla, We leave tomorrow morning!" Alla nodded slightly even more afraid and pretended to fall asleep in her mother's arms; but she really just closed her eyes as tightly as possible. ~..I envy you. I am jealous~
The next morning She watched as Beth dropped bags out of the second story window of the apartment. As Alla was in the bathroom preparing for 'school' she looked up at the mirror. ~Daddy Wake up!~ She was packing her toothbrush and tried to scratch a clue somewhere, anywhere. As to where to find her. The father was asleep in the living room, sawing logs. Beth walked into the bathroom and patted her daughter's shoulder "Don't worry.. Now go outside and wait for me.. have to make it look like it's a normal morning.." She gave that smile that made her scared even more.. She was so afraid, she didn't want to leave with her mom. She remembers all the pain she wanted to forget, all the times she smiled because she told her daughter she was pretty and all the times that smiled faded and screamed that she was ugly.. and all the times malice appeared when she made her own daughter repeat that she was nothing.. That she was ugly.. And yet.. she was being lured in with that false look to leave with this woman. "Now go on dear." Alla nodded and walked out. She crept down the hall and into the living room. There she saw him resting peacefully. ~Dad Wake up!~ She screamed over and over in her mind. He stirred but that was it. She got to the door and took a final look at him. She opened the door. Looked at him again.. She sighed and stepped out; and slammed the door the hardest she can, but making it look as if she stumbled in case Beth was watching.
She hesitated a minute waiting to hear if he did wake up. Nothing. She lowered her head and walked down the steps and to the other end of the building. Soon enough her mom walked by holding there bags. They walked a block away, every step becoming harder and harder to take. Then the Van came.
The van was a faded, rather tacky pale green. A man driving it she had never seen before but the gangly, tall, rather loose character was her uncle Ben. In the van Alla layed down and didn't talk much. She listened to her mom talk.. about the situation at hand and asking how her sister was doing and what not. They drove through a state or two and got to there destination. It was where she had come from.. her home state. Her Aunt and Cousin welcomed her and for a month and a half she lived with them and her mother.. Those times she had the company of her cousin who she loved dearly then most of the time she had gone through the same torture. Beth had torn up most of her things.. breaking Dolls, yelling at her child. Even once dragging her across the ground where she cut herself on a nail in the ground. Mick, her cousin wanted her to be happy, he wanted to take her away from her mother.. but being two months younger than Alla was knew he couldn't help at all. One night he and Alla played outside, she had a thin sheet waving in the air. She looked almost like magic to him. She laughed and smiled and danced around like he did. Then he turned and swung his towel in the air and wooted he heard her laughing cease and turned. Almost in slow motion he saw her whirl around with the sheet and her smile was gone, she was so sad. A sadness that over whelmed him for such a little boy. Her distant eyes came to life again and she forced another smile "TAG!"
During this time Beth gave birth to the other man's child. Alla got to see him before he was taken and even though her aunt noticed an unintentional anger from Alla; She was happy for the child to be leaving and going to a place better off. Soon enough Beth was stupid and called Alla's father. Within 3 days All of her father's cop friends found out where Alla and Beth were. And in a weeks time.. Her father was down there and ready to pick them up.
