It's Midnight In The House

By Estel Elendil

It's midnight in the house
And sleep still will not come
I've tossed and turned
Paced and prowled
I've counted sheep
And counted stars
And counted the hours
As they count down on my clock
In glowing red
I've closed my eyes and held my breath
Sung a song and read a book
And waited motionless
For the sandman
To show his illusive self
But it's midnight in the house
And sleep still will not come
Because my thoughts keep me awake
When I lay in the dark
With no barriers against them
Pictures dancing in my heavy eyelids
Refuse to let them close
Voices in my ears
With nothing to drown them out
My own voice
And yours
So it isn't dark
And it isn't quiet
And it's midnight in the house
But sleep still will not come
