Chapter 1:

Alex has been my best friend for as long as I can remember. We have been through everything together. He was there for me when my parents died and when I got dumped for the first time. He had always been my steady shoulder to lean on. I would do anything for him and he would do anything for me. It's weird because not that I'm a little older and we live together, I feel differently towards him. I remember when we were younger and we couldn't wait to see one another. Now, it seems we never find the time for one another. I wish I had my best friend. I just got dumped my fiancé of two years, but Alex isn't there. I have no shoulder to cry on. I have a friend who walks in and out of the front door to the apartment we share without so much as smiling at me. He has moved on with his life. He is the hottest cook in town and I'm just a designer waiting for a small boutique to have available space. He has no time in his life for me. Even if he is just working at his dads restaurant, people come to just eat there food. I've lost everything and I can't get it back.

Kitty massaged her head as she rinsed out the shampoo. She was always thinking about something or other. She knew what she wanted and she had her dreams. It just always startled her when she thought about Alex. He always came to her mind in the strangest situations. Like when she was taking a shower, for example. She never understood why he was always on her mind. She liked him as a friend and nothing else. She never knew who she was trying to convince more, everyone else or herself.

"Alex! What are you doing in here?"

"I need to brush my teeth and you have been in here for ages."

"I'm taking a shower!"

"It's not like I can see you through the shower curtain."

"I can't be late today."

"It's Saturday, what do you have to be on time for?"

"I got an interview set up with some guy. If her dad likes me, he'll loan me the money to start my own restaurant." Alex said as he started to brush his teeth. He wiped off the steam from Kitty's shower as the mirror was all fogged up. He spit out the toothpaste that was in his mouth and rinsed with water. He wiped his mouth off and grabbed a towel for Kitty.

"I'd lock the door, if I knew you didn't have a key."

"It's inevitable; we will have to see one another. Believe it or not, but that's what being roommates is all about."

"I should have moved in with Jonathan when I had the chance."

"The obnoxious abusive jerk you used to call your fiancé? I wouldn't have let you move out. Even if that meant tying you up and locking you in my room. I couldn't stand the way he hurt you, and he just better not pass my path."

"At least he cared," Kitty mumbled as she walked out grabbing the towel to hide her body and she dried away the water droplets on her skin. She looked at him. He was here with her, but he didn't really care anymore. It was all about Candy and she wasn't even his girlfriend. Kitty hated her with a passion.

"What did you say?"

"You can be so…"

"Loveable, sexy, daring, you can stop me any time."

"I was going to say infuriating."

"I love you too."

Kitty rolled her eyes as she brushed past him to go change. Alex shut the bathroom light off and followed her. He needed to talk to her and he didn't have any time to waste. He needed her reassurance that he wasn't going to fuck everything up today. They had made a promise when they were in high school to be each others first costumers and always support one another's dreams.

"Candy set up this interview for me."

"The stripper?"

"She's not a stripper."

"She has the name of a stripper."

"I didn't name her, I just…"

"Date her, "Kitty finished as she slipped a white sundress over her towel. She looked at him. She almost wanted to make him to choose between the two of them, but she knew he would choose Candy, and she didn't want to loose him. She smiled as she pulled her bathing suit bottoms up under her dress and tied her top over her sleeveless dress. Then she pulled the dress to cover her bikini top. She amazed herself at how she could change in front of Alex and not show him a single goody.

"I'm thinking of taking our relationship a step further."

"I don't like her."

"I'm well aware of that."

"There is just something about her…"

"Well, I like her, and you just have to live with that."

"What if I can't?"

"You might have to find other living accommodations."

"I pay half of all the bills."

"You don't run my life Kitty."

"Date whoever you want, but get out of my room. I guess Ill see you at work. Don't worry, I wont bother you," Kitty said pushing a puzzled Alex out of her room. She could feel the tears building up in her heart. If she couldn't get along with Candy, she'd loose Alex. She walked over to her CD player and pressed play as she listened to their song, I Turn to You and sang along. It was all she had left of Alex.
