The New Ear-Pierced Me

In the chair I sat with growing anticipation.
I could hear my heart thumping in my ears.
Then they came closer -
The person who I feared, yet grew increasingly excited about.
I saw the black object in their hands,
And looked at the people standing around.

I can't back down now.

I looked at my mom and smiled
Just as the object bit my earlobes.
From the stinging sensation I secretly cringed,
But I dared not show it on the outside -
Not with all these people watching.

After all, three-year olds have a reputation, too.

I walked to my mom who took my hand,
And we walked through the mall.
I felt like the bravest three-year old in the world,
And I thought I was queen of the mall.
As my mom and I walked out the doors I thought:

I'm a big girl now.
