Chapter 2
They stood on a sidewalk in the middle of the busy city. They couldn't understand what they were looking at. They had never been to such a busy and strange planet. Leila was looking at a book on Earth, it was sold at most planet bookstores. Apparently Earth is very well known among the solar system, but it's not particularly liked. The book was quite bias and said some nasty things about Earth.
"It says here that humans are greedy by nature." Unfortunately...most of them were true. "It also says that they'll do just about anything for a buck. Some will even have a garage sale." She looked up from the book. "Whatever that is."
"Doesn't it explain what it's writing about?" Kyrin asked as her eyes were shifting all over.
"Kinda...but I guess we have to go straight to the source to find out. So let's find one of those garage sales, maybe they have food."
"How?"
"Well..." Leila looked around and finally saw signs all over the place that said 'sale' on them. She figured those would be good places to check out, since a garage sale does have the word sale in it. They went from store to store asking if they had a garage sale. Some looked at them funny, some laughed, some even were speechless. Finally, one awfully nice woman who worked at a cloths store gave them a classified ads.
They walked outside and stared at it for a while and soon they found the section that said 'garage sales'. Finally, they were on their way...to buying cheap items at crazy people's houses. Then, their next dilemma arose, "How are we supposed to find those address's?" Kyrin generously pointed out.
Leila looked up and saw street signs. She looked back down at the paper then back up at the street signs. "Those signs on those poles seem to be our key to finding these garage sales."
"How about con someone into being our guide?" Kyrin suggested.
"Good idea!" They pulled the first person that passed them out of the traffic of other people. "We have a job for you." It was a teenager walking home from school, at least that's what it looked like. He looked them up and down and agreed to whatever they had in mind for him without even thinking about it.
"Show us where these garage sales are." Kyrin took the paper from Leila to give to the teenager.
He looked at all the ads and then up at them. "All of them?"
"Yeah, why not?"
"They're all over town, it would take forever!"
Kyrin and Leila looked at each other then shrugged and looked back at him, "We really don't see what the big deal is." Leila said crossing her arms.
He looked them up and down once again and finally realized, "You're not from around here, are you?"
"You could say that." Leila smiled.
"Well no matter how smokin' you two may be, I ain't got time for this. Get yourself a map or somethin'." He walked off while shaking his head. He looked back at them as they watched him walk away with puppy dog eyes. He didn't go back.
"Lazy bastard. What's the big deal?!" Leila shook her fist at him.
"He said something about a map."
"Oh, yeah." She whipped out the book and searched for the reason they would need a map. "It says..." She paused, "Earth is so big that they need a map for each city, a map for each state, a map for each continent and then a map for the whole world. Some cities even need more then one map considering how large they can get." She looked up and shifted her eyes to Kyrin. "This could be cause for more trouble then it's worth."
"As if we have a choice." Kyrin sighed with an astonished expression plastered on her face as she looked around at all the people bustling about. Leila put her book away in her dimensional pouch once again and hunched over from exhaustion.
"Why is it so difficult to get something to eat around here?" Leila groaned.
"You're in the wrong area." A male voice was heard next to them. They turned their heads and looked at the same man, it was the same one who had run away with the duck earlier.
"Hey there." Kyrin smiled.
"Where's that duck?! I know a fire spell, I'll just torch it!" She grabbed onto his shirt with a psychotic expression that stared into his eyes. He wasn't really afraid, just confused.
Kyrin's eyes almost bugged out of her head seeing her sister act in such a way. She pulled her off of him and stepped in front of her, "Again, terribly sorry, she's normally much better behaved, she's just starving, as am I. You mentioned we were in the wrong area?"
"Where are you two from?" He said looking at them up and down.
"I don't know you well enough to let you in on my secrets. That could always change." She smiled softly. She was oblivious at times, but heck, she definitely knew how to tease a mans heart.
"Heh." He chuckled, "I'll keep that in mind. Turn and go to the end of the street then turn right and you should start smelling the food. There's really no way you can get lost. See ya." He lifted his hand in a wave and turned to walk off, but Kyrin grabbed his arm.
"Wait, what's your name?"
He partially turned and looked at her, "Taojin. Call me Tao, if we ever meet again."
She let go of him and held out her hand, "Nice to meet you Tao, I'm Kyrin. This is my sister Leila." Leila stood next to her and held out her hand as well with a smile. Tao was presently surprised by the kindness, it was rare, he was sort of hesitant, but he shook their hands none the less. There was something about them that he couldn't ignore.
"Would you like to join us?" Leila asked. "Even with those simple instructions, knowing us, we'd probably still get lost." She lied, even a dog could follow those instructions. But she noticed that Kyrin seemed to have an eye for him. He was definite eye candy, wasn't Leila's type, but she'll help Kyrin all she can.
He thought for a moment then finally answered with a smile. They also smiled in hopes he would say yes, "No, I gotta get going. See ya." Their smiles faded as he turned and walked away.
"Damn." Leila snapped her fingers then cuffed her hands behind her head. "Oh well, let's go."
"He seems so lonely."
"Yeah, right. So does that guy." She looked over across the street at a rugged older man who was inching down the side walk with a walker and sun glasses on. Kyrin looked at him and squinted,
"Let's eat." They followed the directions in which they were told and they made it without any distractions.
They found a nice little café, sat down, ordered and their food arrived promptly. They were satisfied with the service and the food, they didn't even know what they were ordering, they just randomly pointed. Lucky for them, they were diverse in most languages, and English just happened to be one of them. Unfortunately they didn't know any other language on Earth, mainly cause they didn't know there was more than one. But they'd soon find out.
They finished and the bill was left on the table. They waited and waited and waited some more. They soon got irritated, "How do we pay?" Leila said looking around for the waitress. Normally they were always told their total and they would pay right then and there, they weren't use to a paper bill.
"Maybe since we're first timers we get the first meal free." Kyrin suggested.
"Hm...The book doesn't say anything about that, let alone that sort of kindness. But maybe it's a special day that we're unaware of. So in that case..." They stood up and walked out. The waitress went pick up the money and there wasn't anything there. She looked all over for it but realized they had walked away without paying. She ran out with the bill in her hand and caught them just as they were about to cross the street to explore some more.
"Hey! You! You didn't pay! You! You in da crazy outfits!" The waitress yelled to them. They ignored her at first until their outfits were insulted. They turned and stared at her as she ran in front of them and stopped to catch her breath before she spoke again.
"Can we help you?" Leila asked.
"You didn't pay!"
"You never asked us."
"Ask you?! Ther's a bill right her'!" She talked in a slight accent. She held up the bill.
They looked at it and saw some scribbles. "Um..." Kyrin tapped on her chin.
"What is this?" Leila looked at it as though it were a monster.
"It's yur bill! What are ya, stupid?" Yet another insult.
"Look..." Leila cracked her knuckles. Kyrin's eye twitched. Just as they were about to lay the smack down on her, Tao stood in front of them, looked at the bill then counted his money and paid her.
The waitress took the money and mumbled away. Tao turned and looked at them, "What is wrong with you two?"
"She insulted us...twice!" Leila protested.
"She started it!" Kyrin puffed her cheeks.
"You didn't pay your bill!"
"So we heard." Kyrin grumbled.
He continued, "Do you even have any money?"
"Of course we do." Leila examined her finger nails, "We're far from poor. We're just not use to the customs."
He narrowed his eyes in disbelief. "You apparently need to be babysat." They stared at him, dumbfounded. He sighed, "Do you two have a place to stay?"
"We're looking for a place to live actually. We're here for the long run." Leila crossed her arms. "We can take care of it."
"Without money or a job you can't take care of anything."
"We have our ways." She smirked.
They stared at each other for a moment. He lifted his hands up in defeat and chuckled, "Can't wait to see the outcome."
"Does that mean we'll be seeing more of you?" Kyrin asked with a smile.
He looked up at Leila who was smiling and nodding. He looked back down at her, "We bumped into each other one too many times, I'm sure we'll bump into each other again."
"We will." Kyrin giggled. He walked away with a chuckle.
"Ok, let's follow him." Leila smirked and crouched down as if she was trying to hide in broad day light with people surrounding them.
"What?" Kryin spun around to look at Leila with bug eyes.
"What?" She apparently saw no problem with it.
"We can't follow him!" She smacked her sister in the arm.
"Ow!" She rubbed it, "What is the problem?"
"If we did it then we couldn't go exploring! I got wiggle to do it." Wiggle is a ghost who follows someone until the one who cast it out, revealed herself next to the one being followed.
"How could I miss that?" Leila stared at the ghost floating near his head far into the distance.
"Anyway, we need to fit in."
"So far, this is the only planet you find it necessary to fit in." She crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes, "As if I have to ask as to what the reason may be."
"People keep calling us strange, of course!" Kryin looked away just as she started to blush.
"Mmhmm." Leila raised an eyebrow and smirked. She wrapped her arm around Kyrin's neck and gritted her teeth, "Then let us venture to fit in!" She yelled with a finger pointed toward the sky. They still didn't know what the local currency was. I guess they figure they'll find out sooner or later.
