Bouncing in his stride a jaunty way
Whistling for no care in the world
Caring not about the wind whistling through the trees
Jim, he said
Come here
Cocking head to side he stood
Quiet and still and listened
Jim boy hurry up he said
Grinning a while then walking
He trailed his right hand by his side
If you looked closer you'd know, you'd see
His fingers scratch the ears of a dog unseen
The gentle affection from master to pet
Jimmy jim jim leave that cat alone
He giggled and he smiled and walked on by
Through the dark through the cold
The night parted from him like the sea for moses
Billowing wind icy chill huddled I stood alone
Watching this man and his dog unseen pass
It wasn't my place to tell the poor man
Or to find the heart to break upon him
Jim was no more, gone, long before
He'd stayed a while but his canine soul moved on
Away away from his loving faithful master
Away away from our harsh world
But like a dog cannot be pulled from the grave of his master
Master cannot be pulled from the ghost of his dog
That loving four legged companion
Wet nose and happy big smile
And the joyful barking that broke the silent wind
A translucent tail wagged its happiness at me
And trotted off to join his translucent companion
Jimmy jim jim where have you been he laughed,
As they both faded away into the trees.
