Chapter Three-Surprise Visit and Choice
Aaron was at home eating his dinner on his wobbly table, which had a leg sitting on a book. His dinner was a very delicious, note the sarcasm, T.V. dinner. Of all the things he could do, he couldn't cook for shit. While he was eating, he could hear David yelling at Charm. Stupid girl, he thought, you should leave him. You deserve much better.
He too wasn't good for her. Hell, he was just like her boyfriend. Will maybe better and worst. Better because he would never abuse a woman and worst because he could easily kill men. But that's what he did and he was good at his job. Simple. He shook his head, trying to get rid of and wondering why he was comparing himself to Charm's boyfriend.
He got up from the table and went to the door. He looked through the tiny peep hole. He saw Charm walk by his door. He could hear her hurried footsteps going down the stairs. He then returned to his solitary T.V. dinner.
About ten minutes later, he heard footsteps and hushed voices. He went to the door and looked through the peep hole again. But instead of seeing Charm, he saw four men with different types of guns visible in their hands. Two had machine guns, one had a shotgun, and the fourth had nothing in his hand, but probably had a gun hidden in his coat. They walked by his door.
He heard a knock right next door-at Charm's place. He put his ear next to the wall, hoping that he could hear much better. He heard the door squeak as it opened. He heard footsteps and mumbling. He couldn't make it out. He then heard footsteps coming from the hallway. He quickly went back to the peep hole. One man was pacing the hallway-as if he were on watch.
Suddenly, gun shots could be heard. Aaron knew that they haven't shot the machine guns yet because the noise wasn't constant, rapid. Hearing gun shots in this part of the neighbor hood was nothing new. Someone would eventually call the police. Silence and more mumbling could be heard. Then the constant, rapid sound of a machine gun could be heard. The sound kept coming and coming and coming. Hopefully they don't shot at my wall, he thought, I don't need any holes in it. A deadly silence set over the building.
Footsteps could be heard coming up the stairs. It was Charm. She was carrying two grocery bags in her arms. Instead of going by Aaron's door, she stopped right in front of it. It looked as if she was holding back her tears and trembling. She rang the doorbell. Aaron didn't answer.
"Please open the door," he heard her whisper softly. Her hair fell into her face, hiding her silent tears from the man pacing in the hallway. She rang the doorbell again. Still, he didn't answer. The man was now looking at her suspiciously.
"Please."
Aaron stood there, in front of the door, contemplating if he should let her in or not. Should I open the door? If I don't, she might be killed, but if I do, I know I'm going to regret it later on. Shit, why am I even thinking of this? Why do I care? Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!
"Please."
Charm was desperate for Aaron to open the door. She would do anything. She didn't want to be killed inside this pathetic apartment building. Not like that. She could feel her tears falling down her cheeks, and she was trying very hard not to tremble. She could feel the man, who was in the hallway, eyes on her. They were burning right through her.
Suddenly-very slowly-the door started to open. When the light from the room hit her face, she let out a long breath, relieved. She then walked into the room as if she wasn't aware of the man looking at her. "Thank you," she mouthed to him as she walked by, ignoring the fact that he had a gun in a shoulder holster.
His apartment looked even crappier than hers. But that didn't matter because he was nice of enough to let her in. The paint on the walls were pealing, there was a small couch in the small living room, a tiny kitchen, and a table with a book holding up a leg. She put her two grocery bags on the table and went into the living room. From there, she could see Aaron.
She didn't feel like sitting down. So she stood there, watching Aaron looking through the peep hole on the door. Realization finally dawned on her. Wait a minute, she thought, if he was there the whole time⦠then he would have known I was there. What the hell took him so long to answer the door?
After five minutes of watching Aaron looking through the door, thinking bitter and thankful thoughts of him, she was about to sit down when he finally moved away from it. He walked into the living room and sat down on the small couch.
"Are they gone?" she asked. He just nodded.
Sirens now could be heard off in the distance. She was about to say something when Aaron spoke up. "Look, you should probably get some sleep. The police will probably come over and ask some questions. I'll handle it."
He got up and started walking towards a closed door. She followed him through it. It was his tiny bedroom.
"You can sleep in here tonight," he said before he quickly left the room.
"Thank you," she said to the empty room.
She quietly took off her shoes and lay down on the bed, on her back. She stared at the ceiling, wondering what she was going to do next. She rolled on to her side, into a little ball, and started to cry. She turned her head into the pillow, so it could muffle the sounds of her crying. The pillow smells good-like cologne. She bitterly laughed. What kind of a thought was that? After all I've been through tonight.
She tightly shut her eyes, forcing herself to sleep. She heard the doorbell. A door opened and she could hear mumbling coming from outside the bedroom door. It was probably the police. She closed her eyes again, ignoring the voices. She didn't fall asleep until the first few rays of the sun shone through the window curtains.
