When we finally arrived to the mall, we all went directly to the food court. We talked about everything. Movies, songs, artists, cars. They even told me stories from when they were younger. We had a blast.

The next day when I got to school there was a note in my locker It was from Nicole. I opened it.

It read:

Hey new girl. I noticed you went to the mall with Joey and his loser friends. Look I'm pretty sure you've already noticed that they're the wrong people to hang out with. Lucky for you I can show you the ropes. Come sit with us today at lunch instead of with those losers.

"Hey," said a familiar voice.

"Hey. Jessica, right?"

"Right. Kid you have fun yesterday?"

"Yeah. I had lots of fun."

"Good. Whats that," she looked at the note.

"It's a note from Nicole."

"Ah. The loser note."

"Huh?"

"That's the note that says that you're hanging out with the wrong people and that you should let her show you the ropes, blahty, blahty, blah. Am I right?"

"Yup. That's it."

"We won't tell you that you can't hang out with her or be friends with her, but I'll tell you right now that if you're willing to become friends with her you have to be careful. OK?"

"I'm not going to be friends with her. I just don't want to be her enemy."

"Too bad."

"Excuse me?"

"Oh please. No one else might have noticed but I did." She turned around and started singing. "Some one has a crush on Brad."

"Ok! Ok! Could you keep it down?" I couldn't believe that she had noticed. I wonder who else noticed?

The bell rang and we started walking to homeroom.

"Look what I'm trying to say is that everyone knows that Nicole has had a crush on Brad for the longest time and she likes to talk a lot of shit. She's the kind of person that loves to boss people around."

Two periods later I saw Kathleen and told her about the note. Although in different words, she pretty much told me the same thing Jessica told me.

"Be friends with her if you want but be careful. The girl isn't exactly what you would call an ideal friend."

"I'm not going to sit with her. I'm going to tell you the same thing that I told Jessica. I don't want to be her friend but I don't want to be her enemy."

I jumped at the sound of the bell. We left the classroom and started walking to our next class.

"Hey," said a friendly voice.

"Hi Jo," Kathleen answered.

"What class do you have now?" I asked her.

"Geometry."

"Is Brad here?" Kathleen asked.

"Yeah he is," she said as she gave me a wierd look. Just with the look, I already know that she knows. My question is, does he know?

"Well, I'll see you guys at lunch."

"Bye." We both said.

When we got to our next class, Kathleen turned to me and suspicially asked, "What would you say if Joey asked you out?"

"What do you mean?"

"Simple. Would you say yes or no?"

"Did he say something to you?"

"No. Of course not."

"In that case, I'd say yes."

"What's your idea of a perfect date?"

"Well if I were near a beach I'd say a walk on the beach but since we're not, dinner and a movie sounds good."

"Cool! It's simple and romantic."

"Why are you asking me this, again?"

"No reason."

"Whatever."

When we went to lunch Nicole came up to me.

"Hey. Gem, right?"

"Yeah."

"We sit over here."

"Actually I want to go sit with my friends."

"Are you blowin me off?"

"No. I..."

"Your're blowing me off for those losers."

Nicole raised her voice. So I thought: if you can't beat them, join them.

"Those people who you call losers are my friends."

"Yeah right. They'll never be good for anything."

"No. You'll never be good for anything."

"Is that a threat."

"No."

"Yeah ri..."

"Back off bitch," Jessica said behind Nicole in a demanding voice.

"Excuse me?"

"I said, back off."

"What's going on here," I heard a voice say behind me. I knew it was the principal.

"Nothing," Nicole said then turned around and sat down.

"Come on Gem."

Jessica grabbed my arm and walked toward our table.

"You guys alright?" Kathleen asked.

"Why would she make a fuckin' scene about this? It's not like the world is gonna end if I don't sit at her damn table."

"It's Nicole."

"Joanna's right," started Kandyce, "it's Nicole."

"She makes a scene about everything," Chris added

"It's just the way she is. She always has to be the center of attention," Jessica finished.

"Well I didn't want to be her enemy, but , since I alreay am, then I guess she wouldn't mind if I had a little fun."

"You are now officially a part of the group," Kathleen said.
