She would watch him whenever she had the chance. Which was more than enough due to the fact that they were friends, hung out during lunch, outside of school, and even had classes together. They knew each other in elementary school, but never really hung out because she was the nice and popular girl that everyone flocked to and he was the anti-social nerd that came along with a nice pair of nerdy glasses.
But she noticed him. In fact, she wasn't aware of anyone else, but she singled him out because in a sort of twisted way he intrigued her. Physically, mentally, and emotionally. She liked how his face would light up whenever he smiled and the braces the covered his teeth glinted in the light. She admired his kindness towards those who came to him and offered him company. But don't be mistaken, he wasn't completely anti-social. He had friends. Just as the popular kids congregated around each other, so did the nerds, and the wackos, and the ADD infested kids running about.
When they'd graduated to junior high and forgot your elementary friends, she still remembered him and her eyes would search him out whenever the opportunity arose itself. She was no longer the popular girl who had faceless strangers falling all over her feet to grab her attention, but she was still her kind self.
Popularity meant nothing to her. All she cared about was him. He who remained the same, but matured and became more beautiful as the years past. And now in their final year of high school, she still held onto the same exact feelings she had back when she was twelve. She befriended him when they had a few classes together during freshman year and became fast friends. Memories of cramming for finals, movie nights, late night conversations, and the rare occasion where they'd attended parties flooded through her mind.
But one word, just one word, kept repeating itself to her like a mantra that a loyal Catholic would recite when a death occurred in the family. Regret. She was full of it. Why didn't she tell him? Why hadn't she introduced herself to him sooner? Why the long wait? Why, why, why? A million of these similar thoughts swam around her head as she finally closed her eyes to see his beautiful face and inhale her last breath. I guess it is true that your life flashes before your eyes when you know that Death has come to take you away.
