CHASE THE BUTTERFLY

xOx

The calendars say it is late autumn
But even walking upon crunchy carpets
And sitting under rainbow trees
Watching ants crawl in search of food
Cannot dispel the image of spring in my mind
For that is the season I associate with you
Even if you now lie buried underneath the earth
I carefully brush away the crumbled leaves
That have gathered on the grey surface of your resting place
I adorn the rough rock with tulips and daffodils
In the hope that some youth can be maintained
Within this chronicle of time
Not that you were old when you died
Not unexpectedly, but too early all the same
There was so much left for you to do
That's why it hardly seems fair
That just when everything started coming together
It was all torn apart
But I will not cry
For you told me it was inevitable
And you wrote me this words
Which I draw on today for comfort and strength:

Time will continue
And so must your life
Appreciate it and enjoy it while you still can;
Do not be afraid to dream
To imagine the impossible;
If you feel like dancing, dance
If you feel like crying, cry
Don't worry about the looks people may give you;
Make sure to explore the world
And you find yourself forever amazed with it;
Learn new things, make new things
Be proud of a job well done
But don't give up if you can't quite get there;
If a friend or stranger is in need
Always make the time to stop and help them
Without expecting anything in return;
When everything seems to be working against you
Realise that the world is still full of beauty;
Remember that life is as complicated as we make it
That there is nothing wrong with enjoying a simple life;
That tomorrow will bring whatever it intends to bring
So live for the moment as long as the moment lasts.
Do not cry for meKeep the memories we shared together alive:
Roll down a hill
Chase a butterfly
Have a swing while at the park
Eat an ice-cream and enjoy it
Build sandcastles at the beach
Lick the spoon when you bake a cake
Escape to your fantasy world from time to time.
Do not cry for me
Our springtime may have ended
But you live on to enjoy the summer that follows
There is much for you to look forward to
And I implore you-
Make the most out of every opportunity
For the summer sun melts away faster than we expect it to
And the autumn and winter that follow are long
With difficulties we cannot yet comprehend
If you take every chance you get to fulfil dreams now
At least you'll have some peace of mind
To help you get through the darkness
And when the ultimate darkness descends
Do not have any regrets
Long ago, we marvelled at nature's rebirth
In the spring that always followed winter
So too does this cycle occur in our own lives
For now, I remain with you in spirit
But one day, we will meet again
And then, we will be free
To spend eternity chasing butterflies across green fields

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Tomorrow, I turn 18. Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to it. But I couldn't bear not saying goodbye to childhood, even if I don't intend to fully let go of my inner child! And just to clarify, the first part of the poem is me talking about my childhood, the second part is childhood talking to me. There's a lot more I could say about the topic, but you've read enough. Please review :)
