Better off Without You

Summary: They argued and fought, and every time they were close to breaking up, she would run back to him and beg him for forgiveness. This time, however, she's not doing the running. This time, she's decided she's better off without him.

He tasted of cigarettes.

That was the first thing that came to mind when I opened the door and found him standing there looking deliciously handsome as always.

Damn him!

He was smiling at me mysteriously; like he knew something I didn't.

He probably did.

Hands stuffed into his pockets, he rocked back and forth on the balls of his heels, waiting.

Well he could keep on waiting.

His black hair fell across his forehead, shadowing his eyes slightly.

And what great eyes.

Dark pools of mystery and secrets. Things he'd never told me. Things he'd never told anyone.

My fingers itched to brush his hair away so I could stare into his eyes. So I could look into those dark orbs and attempt to figure him out. Attempt to understand him.

I didn't though. I held my cool and continued to stare at him, not giving him the satisfaction of caving first. I had done that too many times before and I was not about to start again.

He showed no expression on his face. No hint as to what he was thinking.

That really annoyed me.

But I knew that was why he was doing it.

I was there for his amusement.

We continued to stare each other down, neither of us willing to relent to the other.

Why?

Pride. Honour. Pure annoyance.

Boredom, even.

Why was here?

We had already said everything we needed to.

Well at least I had.

He had just stood there and listened. Then, I had walked away, not allowing him any opportunity to say anything. Mainly because somehow I knew that as soon as he opened his mouth, I wouldn't want to leave.

I have no will-power.

So why was he standing here on my doorstep on this dark and gloomy night?

Why had he come back to me?

He had never done that before. Not in all our years together. If you could say we had been together that is. It was usually me rocking up on his doorstep at ungodly hours of the morning begging for him to forgive me for my hurtful words.

God, I'm pathetic.

Why was he here, and why the hell did he have to look so goddamn good?

Curse him!

"I'm sorry."

What?

Did I just hear correctly? Did he just apologise to me?

"What did you say?"

He rolled his eyes and looked down at his feet.

Very charming. Perfect way to win a girl's heart. Roll your eyes at her as if she were stupid.

"You heard me."

He looked at me intently.

I could feel his eyes boring into mine. It unnerved me.

"Forgive me?"

Forgive? Maybe.

Forget? Never.

"You hurt me."

He nodded slowly.

"I know. I'm sorry."

"Do you even know how you hurt me?" I asked.

If he wanted forgiveness, the least he could do was tell me why he was asking for it. He obviously knew he had done something wrong. However, our personal definitions of wrong have always been extremely different.

"I disregarded your feelings."

Yes, you did.

"I shouldn't have done that."

No, you shouldn't have.

I felt tears well in my eyes as I remembered what had happened between us four days ago. Our argument. His words. My pain.

"I'm sorry."

Three times in one night? I must be special.

"Are you?"

He looked down at me with a hint of a smile. He stepped towards me and lowered his head so it was close to mine.

I knew what he was doing.

He was trying to win me over with his charm.

"I'm sorry," he repeated.

I could feel his breath on my cheek. It was warm and made my skin tingle.

I missed that feeling.

But I knew I was better off without it.

His lips brushed over mine ever so gently. I didn't respond.

He took that to mean that he could deepen it.

I turned my head to the side and felt his warm lips hit my cheek.

He pulled away from me and I took a step back. He looked confused as to what just happened.

Good.

I stared up at him and smiled sadly.

"I'm sorry, too."

Staring into his dark eyes once more, I shut the door and slipped the lock into place.

I got a few reviews for this asking me to continue and explain what happened between these two characters to make them break-up. I'm not going to because I'm happy with the way it turned out. It's closer to home than most of you probably realise, and when I wrote it, my intention had been to create something that people could relate to in whatever way, and I feel that, leaving it open to interpretation, allows people to do just that. That's also why they are nameless characters.
