"I Saw God Once"

I want to meet God,
But I don't know where he is
I thought I saw him on the sidewalk,
Asking for some spare change
So I gave him some spare coins,
He looked so glorious even in poor man's clothing
As I went off and looked back,
He really was just a poor man
"Your not God",

I saw God walking with a limp
His bones subdued him to a lurch,
So I walked with him for five blocks
Just so he could go to church,
He kissed my cheeks
For gratitude best expressed,
I stepped back to take a good look
It was only an old lady in her sunday's best
"I thought you were someone else"
He wasn't here

I went in the peach-coated church,
To see the saints greet me with their sullen eyes
Saw a dove using a saint's staff as a perch,
Soothing were its steadfast cries
I move to the far end to see the main attraction,
The path tainted with the light's colored, glass refraction
There you are
I've been looking for you,
Why didn't you act out when it should have been your cue?
You know I needed you,
Wondering why I am talking to a statuette all painted and glossy
The figure more plastic than the boys in the fraternity,
God wasn't here
Went down the marble staircase,
The steeple chimed those godly bells
I got the same answer from him when I was going through hell,
That he wasn't here

Maybe I just didn't pray enough,
Though I swore I saw him
Shaped on the flock of birds in the sky flying,
In the last breath of a flame before dying
Was it him that pulled me away from the speeding car on the street?
No,
It was just a stranger doing a good deed
But once I did see him however bleak,
My reflection breaking with a tear
I swore I saw that same boy speak,
"I'm here"
There you are.
