A Cold Specie

The human race is what the human race does

From the tall buildings to the large fields of fertilized GMOs

We have lakes we have oceans

We have mountains we have land

Everything is ours

We eat we talk and we sleep

We are a natural marvel…

Or so we call ourselves

Why am I not convinced of this?

Why am I not proud of what I am?

Why do I wish I was something else than human?

If it was about pride, I would be prouder as a tree

Soaking up the rays and making sugars to feed myself

I would be a self-reliant life-form

What am I now, you ask?

I've been told I was more than an animal

I was told I was different from the rest of the mammals

I was told I had a gift from nature

Because I was human

So what is it to be human exactly?

Is it to believe everything you're told?

Is it to pretend like you know everything?

Is it to look down at all the other creatures of the earth?

Is it to select what you find beautiful and destroy the rest?

Because if it is, I'm not human

I see what you want me to be

I see it everywhere

You want me to be a priest

So I can preach my beliefs

You want me to be an engineer

So I can build you something

You want me to be a chemist

So I can invent cures to diseases you bring upon yourselves

You want me to be a warrior

So I can defend someone else's politics and money

You want me to look good

So I can make everyone enjoy being near me

You want me to dress with the clothes you make

So everyone looks the same

You want me to go to school

So I can learn what you want me to learn

You want me to eat what you eat

So I can make the food you like

You want me to do drugs

So I can forget the silly things you told me

Because there's no way in the world you can get me to be like you

Tell me, why do you think you're so great?

Why do you think you are smarter than the dolphins in the sea

Or the monkeys in the trees or the apes sitting on the stone?

Why do you even think you aren't an animal?

What is it about us that make us different from them?

What is it you call a soul?

Is it some kind of gene?

Is it some kind of powerful force?

I haven't heard of anything like that…

I do see a difference between us and the rest of the animal kingdom

I see it all the time but it doesn't inspire what you want me to believe

You want me to believe you're great?

Explain to me why everyone owns a gun

What can you use it for if not to kill people… or yourself?

Explain to me why you believe in God

What can you use that for if not an excuse for being the way you are?

Explain to me why you wish everyone else was like you

What would you want that for if not to eliminate everyone else?

Explain to me why you feel like everyone's after you

Why would you think that unless they feel the same way about you?

Are you any different from everyone?

I sure hope so

Even if you are made to think otherwise

Everyone's different

I know what you are told to believe

I was told the same thing

Please tell me you don't believe it

Please tell me you don't believe you need your television to survive

Please tell me you don't believe what's written in the papers

Please tell me you don't believe weapons can be used to defend

Have you ever seen the great flash?

Have you ever seen the shockwave?

Have you ever seen the fires?

Have you ever seen a mushroom cloud?

Have you ever seen the nuclear reaction upon a virgin land?

Do you even know what that cloud is?

For someone who knows everything…

Did you know what you see isn't the smoke of something burning?

Do you have any idea how hot the fission reaction is?

The smoke you see is the vapor of what was once solid

The steam of all the people you've killed… vaporized

The gaseous buildings that rocket up into the atmosphere

And that gathers into a still black mass of matter

Crushed under its weight

High up in the air

Explain to me what you can use this power for

What good is it to change the sticks and stones?

What good is it to blow shit up?

What has nature ever done to you?

Do you honestly believe you were made to discover this stuff?

Not if you can't understand it serves no purpose I think

And what of cars and trucks?

Should I be pleased that I have an excuse

To go farther away from home?

And what of trains?

Created for the purpose of transporting lumber

As if the trees weren't more useful where they were

What do you want to make toilet paper for?

So you can flush it in our water source?

What is money if not a way to measure

What you've stolen from others

If we needed all these things, why were we better off without them?

Explain to me how I am supposed to marvel

At your creation and destruction?

Explain to me why you are trying to drag me down with you

To our kind's greatest mistakes, to our end and to our indifference?

Why do you even feel you need to tell me these things?

Unless it's to make yourself feel better of your insecurity

Spare me

I have my own insecurities

I just want to be left alone

Why would I need a bank account?

Why would I need a name, a number and an address?

If this was a free country…

I'm not even going to get started!

Instead, I wish to tell you something more important

I know what it is you want me to believe

But there is something I do believe

I believe I am capable of thinking for myself

I believe I don't need anyone to tell me I am human

I believe I am unique

I believe everyone is unique

And most of all

I believe I have a right to my own opinion

Of what a human should be like

Now it's my turn to describe my kind

I've had enough of your guns and roses

Your gas and your tires

Your smoke and your dope

Your religion and your politics

Your sadism and your pains

Your life and your love

Your hate and your solace

Your jealousy and your revenge

Let me be what I want to be

Let me explain what I wish we could be

Let me explain our real potential

It's not what you've been telling me

It's not a dream I've had or a movie I've seen

It's certainly not an article that I've read in a newspaper

It's certainly not a sacred book that I've thought up

No.

It's from my DNA

From my life

From my being

From my mind

From what nature has given me

It's from my freedom of personality

From what I have the power to change

From what I've been blessed to be aware of

From the only thing that does belong to me

From the only thing I have a right to change how I please

As do you

So why do you tell me it's impossible to live without peace?

Would you tell me it's impossible to travel to the moon?

No, but you might have if we lived just a lifetime ago

This is no different

It's not a technology you can invent

It's a natural thing

A process of evolution

A dear fluke of nature that if ignored, it will destroy you

As you've destroyed yourself and those around you

So you tell me your emotion is too strong to ignore?

Would you think the toxic air you breathe isn't?

I don't suggest you ignore your feelings because you cannot

Just as you cannot ignore that you have two feet to stand on

Two eyes to see with and hands to touch with

What I suggest to you, is understand

Understand that you are built to feel these things

Understand that you have power over them

As they have power over you

Understand that there is nothing logical about love

Understand that it isn't rational to be obsessive

Understand that things don't need to be explained

And you will soon see that you can change things

Once you know what these emotions do

Once you know what they are made for

You will understand that you need them to be in balance

As you need to live in harmony

For what use is a mind without a heart?

And what good is a heart without awareness?

You are what you make yourself

Not from body, but from mind

Understand that you must first trust yourself

Before you can find peace anywhere else

If you can't understand yourself, how can you understand others?

How can you even place judgment on others?

I can't

Why could you?

I only know myself

I can only say so many true things

About myself

Everything else

Is a lie

What you read now

Is different then what I wrote

Because I could never understand you

As you could never understand me

Does that still make me human?

I think so

Because what am I without you

And what are you without me?

I know what I am

But what are you?

Do I suggest you become more like me?

No at all

For what am I if not a lonely shadow

Of something that will die more quickly than you can count

Anything more than a whisper of what I am

And I will crumble to the ground

I cannot be explained in words

Nor can I be felt with animal emotions

I cannot be excused with love

I cannot be dismissed with hate

I live in everyone

As everyone lives in me

Because I belong to life itself

My death will not be felt

My tremors will not spread past my grave

My infectious compassion will be cured by ignorance

Because I am human after all

A mortal

A conscious

A life

A death

And a love

To whom do I owe this destiny?

To humanity?

To a God?

Does it matter?

No.

Because I can change

I belong only to myself

Even if I share myself with others

I will die alone

It isn't something to like or dislike

Nor is it something that can be explained by the mind of a mortal

Yet here I am

Describing what could be the last of my humanity

The last traces of my ashes

The last mutation of my genes

The last part of me that is unique

The computer that can feel and think and change and love

Everything and anything that can and cannot exist

That is what it is to be human

Not to create

Not to destroy

Not to feel

But to exist in your own unique perspective

Life will go one without the human race

Don't fool yourself

Respect all forms of life because that's all that will remain

Long after your mind will fail

And if you believe in a soul

Wouldn't you rather have something to look at after you die?

I know I would

And I know life will go on

Regardless of how many stupid things we do

To stay the way we are

I love you all

But remember that that doesn't count

Unless we all love each other unconditionally

I am prepared

Are you?

Peace.
