Jenny.
She was the start of all of this, but she was also the end. Jenny was my best friend and now I sit here in this room. The tiny little interrogation room with the two-way glass mirror. I've been sitting here for most of the night, and a lot of the day before it. I look into the mirror and I don't like what I see.
"What do you mean you're going?"
"I just have to get out of here for a couple of days and clear my head."
"Jenny, I don't get what you're saying. Why can't you just stick around?" The boardwalk was thick with people watching us fight. Even though there was rain, their eyes remained glued to us.
"Look, we just want to know what happened after that," the fat man in the hat asked me. He was a detective.
"Look, she was my best friend. I don't know why you think I could have done this."
The tall, lean cop came up and leaned in close to me. His breath was hot on my neck and the smell of tuna salad was turning my stomach. "I know what you're doing here. You're not going to make a fool out of me," he whispered.
"Look, I just gotta get out of here."
"But why now, Jenny, why? What the fuck?" She pulled me along, trying to get away from the crowd. The rain started to sting my face.
"Look, I love you, but I hate you and I gotta get out of here."
"What does that mean? Come on."
"Leave me alone!" she screamed and kept screaming. I pulled her into me and held her tight until she stopped screaming. We were sitting on a bench far from the crowd that had been watching us. I held her close and she cried.
"I can't let you go. I won't let you go."
"I want the truth. I want you to tell me what went on."
"Oh, come on. You don't want the truth. I had no motive give me a break."
"What happened next?"
"Just tell me what you want to know."
"You know damn well what we want to know."
"She left me sitting there. I watched her walk away."
She looked at me with her big brown eyes and I knew that I couldn't stop her. She smiled wanly at me and I felt a tear drip down my cheek. "I love you," she said. "It's time though, there's somewhere I have to go."
I didn't have anything to say so I watched her walk away. Her long brown hair blowing in the breeze, I took a mental picture. I would always remember her wearing sandals with those jeans that were just an inch too long. I'll remember the surf in the background and the way she pulled her sweatshirt closer as the damp got to her.
"I love you," I called into the wind. "Goodbye." She never turned to look at me.
"I know my rights. I've been here all day and it's time for me to leave. Okay?"
"Just tell us the rest."
"I just can't take this, I swear I've told you the truth. Jenny was a friend of mine." The fat guy stood up and walked over to me. He told me to stay in the area and he grabbed my arm. I looked at him as he opened the door and led me down the hall. I was being released. He looked at me one last time and I pleaded with him.
"Jenny was a friend of mine."
