Chapter One

A Simple Birthday Wish

"If there was one thing you could have in the entire world, one wish, what would it be?"

"I don't know… I've never thought about it before… why would I? It's not like it would come true anyways…"

"Well, no… but just for fun, what would you wish for?"

"I… I just don't know…"

"C'mon! You have to! Your birthday's coming up in a month! What are you going to wish for?"

"Hmm… I'm not quite sure yet… Maybe I'll just wish for good luck."

"That's silly! If you don't make a wish, that's a birthday wasted!"

"It's just a birthday. I'll have another 50 coming up anyways."

"Which are going to be used for 50 other wishes. Well, anyways if you're interested to know, I wish, of all things in the world, to be able to read minds."

"I don't think that's a good wish…"

"Why not?"

"It's just…" A pause.

A month later…

"Happy birthday to you… Happy birthday to you… Happy birthday dear Lori…! Happy birthday, to you!"

A round of applause ran through the room as Lori smiled at the 15 candles in front of her. She took a deep breath.

"Wait!" Her best friend May suddenly cried. She bent down and whispered into Lori's ears: "If you don't have a wish, wish to be able to read minds, please?"

Lori let out her breath slowly, making sure not to accidentally blow out a candle. She looked at May. "Why don't I just wish for you to be able to read minds?"

"Because." May replied matter-of-factly. "Birthday wishes only come true if the wish was related to the birthday person. So, you can be endowed with the ability and just tell me what each person is thinking!"

"Are you using me?" Lori asked suspiciously.

"No, darling, I'm just taking full advantage of the fact that we're best friends."

Lori rolled her eyes. "Sure, why not. It's not like wishes ever come true anyways…" She turned back to the candles and closed her eyes.

I wish to be able to hear thoughts…

Lori took a deep breath and blew out the candles. "Happy?" She said to May with a sarcastic sigh.

May giggled. "Very."

A week later…

Lori pulled stressingly at her long blonde hair. What was it… what was it? This damn question was worth 14 friggin' marks! What was the answer? Why can't I remember? Lori put her hand up, hoping for the teacher to accidentally give her some hints.

"Yes?" Mrs. Khan asked, walking towards her.

"I don't really understand this question…"

"I can't help you out anymore. This is as clear as it gets."

"Um, then can you tell if I'm on the right track?"

Mrs. Khan picked up Lori's test and scanned it over. "This is completely wrong… Gosh don't kids study anymore these days? Make-up isn't the only thing, you know!" She handed the paper back to the disappointed Lori. "I can't tell you anymore…"

"Okay…" Lori replied. She x-ed out all her answer and groaned, writing something else down.

"Well, it's too bad the teacher couldn't have told you more, isn't it?" May commented after class.

"Yeah, I was hoping she'd let something slip… it's too bad she couldn't have said more…"

"Said more? She said nothing!"

"Well, not much, but at least she told me my answers were wrong… but it wasn't necessary for her to taunt me by saying how I only care about make-up and not studies! Because I did study very hard last night! I just missed out that section! What she said was so humiliating for me!"

May raised an eyebrow. "Uh, if it makes you feel any better I didn't hear her say that… and I doubt anyone else did… I guess – uh – she must've said it really quietly…"

"Um… yeah…" Lori replied, frowning questioningly.

Next class…

There was knocking on the door after five minutes into class. Mr. Riley stopped the lesson to open the door. The person at the door gave a note to him as Mr. Riley stepped aside to let the person in.

"Class, we have a new student. He will be joining our school from this day forth. Introduce yourself, please."

May poked Lori, then whispered, "Don't you think he's cute?"

Lori raised an eyebrow. "He has nice black hair."

"Yeah I know! They're so dark… but it' not just his hair though, he's cute all over! I mean look at those broad shoulder, and long legs…"

Lori looked over at the new guy again, trying to see exactly what May saw in him.

And at that precise moment, he suddenly looked up. That movement momentarily swept his long messy bangs to the side, revealing his piercing eyes.

Lori couldn't help but to gasp.

He had blue eyes… not sky blue nor ocean blue but… but blue as ice… they were so bright, so white, and so cold…

"My name is Jae. Jae Lin." He said, staring right at Lori.

And that moment, Lori felt as if he was speaking to her, and her only. She gulped and looked quickly down. "Wow… talk about creepy eyes…" May muttered.

"Yeah…" Lori agreed, still afraid to look up.

"But that makes him even more attractive!" May gushed dreamily.

Lori said nothing. Jae walked past her seat, past May's, and finally settled down two seats behind her. It was then that Lori finally looked up, with a cold chill down her spine.

Lori settled down under a tree beside May and her other friend, Lessi.

"Oh my gosh, have you seen that new guy?"

"How can I not?" Lori replied dryly. "May won't stop talking about him…"

"I can see why…" she giggled. "He is pretty cute… God, but May isn't much of a challenge, so getting him shouldn't be hard."

Lori gasped speechlessly at Lessi, then at May, who clipped part of her shoulder-length brown hair out of her crystal green eyes. Lori blinked. I guess this is some part of an inside joke… She thought to herself.

"Yeah," May replied. "I love his hair… and even if his eyes are a bit freaky, he's still—"

"A BIT?!" Lori gasped. "Those eyes are cold enough to eat souls alive!" Seeing the weird look on her friends' face, she looked down and mumbled, "gave me a bit of a chill when he looked at me…"

Lessi gasped. "He looked at you?!"

"Um, yeah…"

"Right in the eyes?!" May added.

"Um, yeah… that's why it was so scary… just try to survive with those pale, lifeless eyes boring into yours."

"Awww!" May pouted. "That's not fair! Why do all the guys stare at you first?" She sighed but then giggled. "Don't worry about it, I'll just steal him away from you." May winked.

"Damn right! It's so freakin' unfair how you get all the attention! I will get him, Lori Goldmari and if you don't stay out of my way, I'll make you stay out!" Lessi growled.

Lori took a sharp intake of breath. "Excuse me?"

"What's wrong?" May asked. "It's not like you like him or anything…"

"Yeah…" Lori replied, staring at Lessi who continued to smile as if nothing had happened. "Um… I've got to go…" she said. "…To um… Hey Kevin! So, yeah, about our science project!"

The brown-haired boy turned to her. "What science project?"

"Ya know, that science project…" she explained pushing him away. "Bye May, later Lessi!"

"Well, that was weird…" May commented.

But Lessi could only stare. She gasped.

"What's the matter?"

"S-Someone… b-behind, behind you…"

May turned stiff, and mouthed, 'Principle? Vice?'

Lessi shook her head as a hand tapped May's shoulder.

May turned around and nearly died of a heart attack. "H-Hi…"

"You're May, right?" The boy asked in a gentle and cool tone.

"Y-Yes…" She squeaked with wide eyes.

He smiled, but the expression didn't reach his eyes. "How are you?"

He extended his hand, holding his lifeless smile. "I'm Jae. Jae Lin."

"I know." May smiled, a little too happily, and gave him her hand a bit too eagerly.

"May I sit?" He asked, gesturing at the seat Lori previously occupied.

He sat down and faced the longhaired brunette who had her hair up in a high ponytail, with strands of hair hanging down both sides of her face, which she braided into two little braids on each side. Her honey-brown eyes widened when Jae turned to her, but still managed to smile as flirtatiously as she could.

"And you are…" He asked.

"Lessi." She replied. "Lessi Arima."

"Jae Lin."

"Yeah, I know…"

"Seems like everyone knows me around here." He commented. "Do I stand out that much?"

"Yeah…" Lessi muttered. "In the appealing way…"

"Nothing." She said quickly.

"Well, I've been trying to get around the school today, and attempting to learn everybody's names. So, the girl who was with you guys earlier, who's she?" He asked casually.

"You mean Ms. Perfect-Blondie?"

"I didn't say that…" He laughed, yet his eyes stayed cold.

May and Lessi laughed with him. "She's Lori. Lori Goldmari, the mistress of practically every guy's heart in school. We're best friends." May said.

"Lori, huh…" He muttered, then suddenly stood up. "Thanks for the info, but I must leave now."

"To where?"

"To find Lori."

"Why?" Lessi whined.

He shrugged nonchalantly. "Trying to talk with everyone before the day's over. Nothing personal. He stepped away from the seat. "Well bye May, Lessi, see you around."

"Yeah… see ya…" May said dreamily.

There was a tap on Lori's shoulder. She turned around, and gulped. "Hi."

"Hello, Lori." Jae greeted coolly.

"Hey, you're the new kid." Kevin stuck at his hand. "Kevin here. Kevin Janstone."

Jae stared at Kevin's hand long and hard until Kevin began squirming. "Hey if you don't like me you can just say so, man!" He mumbled.

Jae said nothing, but then stared deep and piercingly into Kevin's eyes. Lori felt sorry for the guy, for she knew how hazardous Jae's eyes could be. "I would like to speak with Lori."

"My pleasure." Kevin said it a bit too quickly as he took a step back.

"Without you."

"Why?" Lori asked, before Kevin could agree.

"Simply because I said so."

Lori wanted to argue, but Jae's eyes held her down. "G-Go ahead." Kevin backed up quickly, and was gone before Lori could utter a word.

"Hello, Lori."

"How do you know my name?"

"From your friends May, and Lessi."

"And why would they tell you?"

"If my information's correct, they've both taken quite a liking to me."

"So go charm them. Please leave me alone."

"Are you always this cold to all strangers?"

"No, but if you're not my friend, I do not have to be nice to you."

He nodded. "Indeed. Fair enough."

"If you're done now, can I go? I believe you have scared Kevin."

"Why? I said nothing. I didn't threaten him or do anything offensive to him!"

Lori snorted. "Your looks are threatening enough."

"Thank you."

"I don't mean it that way!"

Another cold, slow smile. "Haven't you ever heard of 'don't judge a book by its cover?'"

Lori looked away. "That's not always true."

Jae nodded. "Would you like to come over to my house today?"

"Excuse me?"

"Well, would you?"

"Um, no."

He paused. "Do it for May and Lessi then."

"What the…"

"You can invite them over with you. I'm sure they'd like that."

Lori said nothing. She turned around and left.

"Are you serious?!" May gawked.

"Yeah, but I don't want to go…"

"No! Please! And bring me and Lessi too!"

Lori looked annoyed. "I don't want to bring Lessi."

May frowned. "Why not? She is a very close friend…"

"Haven't you heard what she said to us today?! She sounded like she would murder us for Jae!"

"What's wrong with you? All she said was that she liked him! I said the same thing!"

"I'm talking about when she was threatening us!"

"She did no such thing!"

"She did too! Are you deaf?"

"It's you who's hearing things!" May sighed irritably. "Can you just bring her and I to Jae's house for my sake then?"

Lori sighed exasperatedly. "The things I do for you…"

After school…

Jae came by Lori's locker. "Ready?"

"I didn't agree to anything."

That smile… so slow and sly… yet his eyes were still stone cold. "Don't do this. I know you've agreed for May, didn't you?"

"What are you, a stalker?"

The smile stretched a bit wider. "No… at least not intentionally… so, you ready?"

Lori sighed. "Yeah, let's go wait for May."

Jae lived in a nice, white and clean house. Everything was white and there were a total of five rooms without a speck of dust. All the furniture he had was a table, four chairs, three twin beds and a cabinet. Not even a fridge or stove.

"How do you survive here?" Lori murmured.

"I think it's very nice." May commented.

"Yeah, I like it." Lessi said.

Lori rolled her eyes.

"Have a seat." Jae offered.

Lori and her friends each pulled out a chair and sat down.

"Lori, I have some people that I think you should meet…"

"Let me bring them to you…" Jae went into the bedroom and soon returned with two girls half his size.

Lori, May and Lessi all gasped.

The girl on his right wore a simple spaghetti-strapped blue dress that reached to a bit above her knees along with two long white gloves that reached past her elbow. There were no designs on the dress at all and her gloves looked five sizes too big. She looked like she's been abused.

"Introduce yourselves, girls."

The girl in the baby blue dress steps closer and Lori notices how unnaturally pale she was. And to make it worse, she had Jae's eyes, except they were whiter and brighter. "My name is Tears of Crystal."

Lori blinked. "What?"

The girl didn't repeat herself, instead, she kept talking as if she were programmed. "But you can call me Crystal or Tears."

The other girl stepped out as Crystal took a step back.

The other girl had bright red, long hair, which stood out from Crystal's shoulder-length shaggy white hair. Her red hair reached above her knees, and she had pigtails tied at the sides of her head. She had violet eyes and wore a black and white one-sleeved tight shirt with a black mini-skirt that had silver chains attached to it. "I'm Rain at Dawn."

Again, Lori was startled. "Pardon?"

"But you can call me Rain or Dawn." She took a step back, grabbed Crystal's hand and they walked away together.

"What kind of names were those?"

Jae shrugged. "I think they're very nice."

"Why do they look like that?"

Again, he shrugged. "It's the way they are."

"And what's their relation to you? Did you abduct them?"

"They're part of me."

"Excuse me?"

"They're part of me." He then stared deep into her eyes. "I won't lie to you, Lori, as much as you cannot accept the truth."

Lori shivered. "W-What are you talking about?"

He stood up abruptly and grabbed May and Lessi's hand. The two girls swooned. "Let's go somewhere."

"No, wait, May, Lessi, stay."

"No way." May replied. "So Jae, where do you want to take us?" She asked sweetly.

"Oh, somewhere special." He said, grinning with those unmoving cold eyes. With that, the three of them left, leaving Lori alone by herself in the horrible, white room.

A shadow crawled on the walls, with complimentary of a red and black figure that followed. She walked up and stopped in front of Lori.

Although Lori was sitting on a chair, the girl still barely reached her shoulders. "Dawn…"

"Yes. But that's my more artificial name… I'd prefer you to call me Rain, and please call Tears of Crystal, Tears." Her green eyes danced charmingly. So different from Jay… She paused and observed Lori carefully. "I think I will finally have a friend soon…"

"Hmm…? Isn't Crystal your friend?"

"She's just someone with me, I wouldn't say friends though." Pause. "You will end up like Jae, Lori."

"Excuse me—"

"No she won't." A soft voice interrupted. Crystal walks out from the shadows and stopped beside Rain. "Or she could die. Jae was strong."

"Oh, don't be so negative! Have some imagination!"

"That's all you are. She'll probably commit suicide."

"Maybe, but I think Jae can pull her back to the colourful world."

"Colourful… hah, what a joke. Jae's strong, but not that strong. He's cold, he feels nothing but he hates it and deep inside he's dying."

"Jae is not! He's just fine, he loves himself this way!"

"Not his darkest side."

"Right. You should know."

"Um, I think I should go…" Lori said uncomfortably.

"Perhaps." Crystal replied without expression. She walked back into the dark.

Rain nodded. "Stay close to Jae, Lori…" And she too, left.

Lori stood up shakily and left in a hurry.

"-And then he showed us his swimming pool which was huge! And he also had like this gorgeous garden! There were so many cute statues! Oh my gosh his house was so white but what's behind there was so bright! He said Dawn designed all of it. Man, that girl is talented!"

"Don't you guys care about what happened to me?" Lori asked, irritated.

"Oh right!" Lessi exclaimed. "You left! What happened?"

"Rain and Tears came to speak to me…"

Lori couldn't continue. "And I just left…"

"How interesting. We were so dying to hear that…" Lessi said with a roll of her eyes.

"Well it's hard to explain! Tears kept going on about how I was gonna die or something…" She muttered.

"Why do you keep calling her Tears? Isn't her name Crystal? I mean that's a more normal name…"

"I know, but Rain insisted I called her that…"

"And why do you not call her Dawn?"

"Again, she insisted!"

"Anyways," May quickly cut in. "What do you mean she kept saying you were gonna die?"

"I don't know… apparently I'm going to commit suicide because I'm not strong enough…"

May snorted. "You? Suicide? If you suicide with your life, then I'm wondering how on earth the rest of the world survives." She winked. "Please, Lori, don't listen to her… that girl's weird…"

"Yeah… But then Rain says Jae's going to save me…"

"WHAT?!" Lessi exclaimed. "Is this some kind of a lame excuse? Are you secretly in love with him? Are you gonna steal him away from us and then say you didn't because he's 'saving' you?"

Lessi raised an eyebrow. "What are you talking about? I never said you had interest in him!"

"May! Tell her she did! You know she did!"

May looked puzzled. "But she didn't…"

Lori felt dizzy. What's going on? She looked at her friends, looking confusedly at her. Either all my friends are going deaf, or I'm just going insane…

This is only the beginning, Lori…

"Who's there?"

May and Lessi looked at each other, then at her. "Are you alright, Lori?"

Lori looked around. There was no one. So what was that voice… inside her head…?

Lori groaned into her hand. "I am going crazy…" she muttered.
