Chapter Four: Part 1: Rest and Recovery
Derrick was just walking out of class when he seen Anna walking out of the girl's bathroom with a smirk. He asked himself what was different about watching her walk out of the bathroom, but he didn't come up with an answer. But, yet… He could feel something was wrong. Just the way she walked, just the vibe he got from her was wrong; terribly wrong.
He watched Anna walk off intently and slowly walked towards the girl's bathroom. He stepped out in front of the doorway and tried to peek inside. "Hello?" He asked the silence. "Is everything okay in there?" He asked, inching inside. He stopped, he wasn't sure if it was polite going into the girl's bathroom. If everything was alright, then everything was alright. He was about to turn and walk back to class when he saw a speckle of blood on the walls. His eyes widened and his heart sped up, beating a little faster. "Hello?" He called again, hoping someone would answer.
He looked back into the empty hallways, looking up and down the corridors to see if any teachers were coming. There wasn't any. Good, he thought.
He raced into the girl's bathroom and gasped, seeing another girl unconscious on the ground, a puddle of blood gathering underneath of her. He dropped the class clipboard and rushed to her side. She was still breathing; he could tell watching her body move up and down slightly. He put his hand on her back and turned her around. He laid her head on his lap and looked to her bloody, beaten face. His eyes weld up with tears; it was the girl from before, the one that he had stopped from being beaten before. He wasn't there this time… It was his fault for not taking care of it before then.
He looked back to the doorway and called out for someone to help, for anyone to get the nurse; a teacher… Anyone! He looked back down seeing that someone started running, he hoped that they would hurry. He laid his hand on her cheek and brushed some hair from her face. Why did they do this to her? He held her tightly seeing her swollen eyes open slightly.
He looked down into her baby blue eyes, which were somewhat red from the beating and crying. "You're going to be okay…" He whispered to her. "Someone's coming; you're going to be alright. I promise."
Raiya said nothing, she could barely move; it hurt to breath. Of course, it always had, but this time it was worse. She looked up into his eyes. Her lips moved but her voice was far away from her. Let me… Die. She thought. She closed her eyes as Derrick was pushed aside by the nurse.
She could feel her cold hands on her hot, moist skin. She didn't want to move, she wanted to die. Let me die… She thought again, fading deep off into the darkness that wished to swallow her soul.
Raiya woke up a few hours later, her body stiff. She tried to open her eyes but the swelling was worse. She moved her head slightly to see one of the nurses checking up on the I.V. protruding from her wrist. She moved her head the other way, expecting to see her angry father but her eyes widened, seeing the boy holding her hand tightly.
Derrick held onto her hand tightly, hoping she would wake up soon. Just a few minutes earlier, he had told the police that he had seen Anna walking from the girl's bathroom just moments before he found her on the ground. His dark hair was falling in his face as he raised his head. He smiled to her slightly, seeing that she was awake. He stood up and went over to stand by her bed.
Raiya watched him, barely able to keep her eyelids open. She was too weak to fight him holding her hand. It felt good, actually; a comfort in all this pain.
He took a deep breath and looked deep into her eyes once more. He was angered at Anna, but he was also sorrowed that this beautiful girl had to endure such torture. He had heard the nurses talking, saying that her father sounded drunk on the phone, and that he would probably come here in a stretcher rather than his truck. He turned back to Raiya maybe it was the best. He had also noticed that her wrist and arms had many scars and a few cuts across them. He ran his fingers across the gently as if slowly healing them.
Raiya closed her eyes again, giving into the nagging temptation to fall asleep once more. Her grip on his hand tightened for a minute before it slowly loosened again as her body fell limp.
Derrick sighed and backed away a little, letting her hand drop from his. He backed away from the bed lowering his head. He would come back later, she needed her rest now. He turned around and headed out of the room, walking slowly through the corridor of the hospital. How could Anna do something like that? Was she really that primitive? That brutal? He could imagine in his mind what she was really like: an evil bitch that destroyed everything in her path that she didn't like or disagreed with. He guessed that maybe she was jealous of Raiya, but he never really understood the way of other humans so he didn't bother trying.
