Waiting

I hear the thunder echoing

Through my cell,

Lightning crackles

As howling winds taunt me.

Insecurities laced with dread and grief

Mock me,

And I scream through my bars at the stars.

Dawn warms my face as I hear the soldiers call,

I struggle to hold my head high,

I will die like a man.

Marched past the prisoners,

And their eyes tell me "Better you than me",

But we all know,

One day,

One morning will be their last,

The dark angel waits,

Their deathday will soon come.
