Prologue: 'The Legend of Creation'
Before the very creation of worlds, there were four elemental Spirits; Fire, Air, Water and Earth. They had balance, an ultimate link between beings. With each depending on the other for survival and evolution, there was no such thing as domination nor discrimination. All four were equals.
Thus they co-operated in perfect unity, bringing the world as we know it into being. Proud of their work, yet fearful of what could happen if their children found out about their powers, the Spirits choose to stay anonymous and transformed into creatures who could easily blend into the habitation of their world. Dragon, Hawk, Kraken and Lizard.
All beings prospered, but none as fast and great as the humans, who proved themselves to be well capable of adapting to problems and evolving into more than they were before. Three elementals were delighted by their progress, although one felt concerned. Maybe the humans were growing too fast. Despite his worries, the excitement of his siblings was never dampened.
So the years went by. The humans had a thriving society and culture in which everything seemed to be possible. The Spirits judged that some of the humans were ready to gain knowledge about their creators, and each picked a specimen by hand.
Three months later, four humans gathered to meet the elemental Spirits. Each deity had taken their preferred shape – the same form in which they had entered the world after its creation – so they would not scare the humans away.
After the humans had accepted the tremendous power that these seemingly ordinary beings contained, they were taught how to wield that power by themselves. The four humans learned how to co-operate just like the elementals did, and though their nature gave difficulties at first, they soon relied on each other with complete trust. They were named the Emissaries; another link, this time between elementals and humans. Entrusted with the task to slowly introduce the Spirits to their people and to help maintain the balance, the Emissaries swore not to let their tutors down.
Granted immortality by the Spirits, the humans maintained balance for a long time, and managed to discreetly teach their culture about the Spirits. Religion was born, and spread with the speed of dragonwings. But the Emissaries failed to hide their true powers from fellow humans. Soon enough, one addressed the Emissary of Earth, and she reluctantly decided to teach him about the wielding of 'Magic', as the regular humans tended to call this power.
When the other Emissaries found out what Earth had done, they were furious. Fire even threatened to kill the student, but Water and Air managed to restrain him. But what else could they do? The three promised Earth not to tell the Spirits unless it was absolutely necessary, and Earth herself talked to her student.
Desperately she tried to convince him that her plan was for the best; draining the magic away from him. But the student refused, as the power streaming through his veins was untamed and had corrupted him. He did something Earth had never expected; he attacked his teacher. Earth quickly realised that her student didn't intend to kill her – he was drawn to her power, as the corruption filled him with greed. The element of surprise had worked in the student's advantage; Earth was weakened, and her student cleverly used her reluctance to fight against her.
Soon enough Earth saw no other option than to transfer her Magic to a place her student wouldn't be able to reach. With the bond between minds she contacted the Spirits and admitted her mistake. They hastened to Earth, but she had already began the transfer.
The student fled once he realised who the four beings were, but not before swearing he would return, with enough power to quench his thirst. Hawk, the Air Spirit was troubled; how could they have overlooked this?
Dragon of Fire, took initiative and assembled her powers in an attempt to heal their Emissary. Quickly, the other three joined her, but Earth's portal was still open. As soon as their Magic had entered Earth, it immediately left her and they were added to her own, now hidden power.
Earth managed to tell her tutors where her Magic was hidden, and Dragon took off.
She found an abandoned temple, and Magic was everywhere. Although the Spirits had not given away all of their powers, it was still a dangerous amount to fly around unchecked and untamed. Thus Dragon forged an item with a key to unlock its powers. She trapped the Magic inside, but not before some of it escaped into the open world. The item remained in the temple where the Fire Spirit took extra precautions, and the key was hidden in the world, where it would dwell undetected until the day it was meant to be found.
And Earth passed away, but whispered in her last words that someone would come to claim her powers and protect the world against her corrupted student.
While searching for the student and taming the free Magic, Spirits and Emissaries tried to continue their lives as best as possible. They feared the balance would break with the absence of Earth, but it never did. Her tutor, Lizard, searched for Earth's presence and found her.. everywhere.
Earth's soul had passed from her body into the very soil, and her inner self remained in the world, sustaining balance as it was supposed to be. Lizard smiled, and convinced the others not to enslave the now tamed Magic to their will, but to let it dwell, entering the individuals of their own choice as a memento to the deceased Emissary.
Decades later, signs told them that the one they had been waiting for finally arrived. An heir to Earth's Magic, who would help with protecting the world. And up till now, she has been left alone to grow up without responsibilities, but Fire, grown impatient now searches for her, and is determined to find her. He shall make her accept her status and protect her from those who want to do her harm or use her for their own purposes.
For the student searches, too; he noticed the signs as well. Using the Magicians he recruited and trained for himself, a race has started to find her, the one who will shape the new fate of the world.
Don't worry if things aren't clear or don't seem to make sense; most of it has a reason of which the explanation didn't fit into this prologue (but don't be afraid to ask about it – then I know if I missed things without a reason).
