Chapter Nineteen: Falling for a jackass?
"Hey you okay?" Lily asked after about the third time I zoned out through our conversation. She was telling me something along the lines of a monkey and a… tea party? Yea, I really wasn't listening at all. I rubbed my eyes before answering.
"Yea, sorry Lilz… I just can't seem to stay focused today." And it was true. All through out the day my mind kept wandering. I even bandaged Mr. O'Conner's fingers together instead of his fractured wrist. I just couldn't stay focused and for some unknown reason, my mind kept wandering to five days ago when Marie, Brie, and Toni left. It was amazing how much changed in less than a week. Abu went back with his owner the day before last, so now there's not much chaos in the house and of course no one to knock Christmas trees on people, which I guess is a good thing- well except if it was Toni again, I mean come on who wouldn't want to see that again?
Speaking of her there's no more seething blonde bimbos which is a good thing also. But I'm kind of upset… Who am I going to piss of now? My grand mother went back to the nursing home yesterday afternoon. Even though we asked her to stay for the party tonight she said she wanted us to have a good time and not have to worry about her. That bothered me that she left but what seemed to bother me even more was that since Marie, Brie, and Toni left Nick and I don't have to pretend to be together anymore. I don't know why this bothered me so much, probably since I got used to hanging out with him and now that they left we hardly spend anytime together, which is kind of sad since we live in the same apartment... Yea I realize this shouldn't bother me so much but-
"Okay, seriously what is wrong? You zoned out again." Lily's worried voice snapped me from my thoughts.
"I'm just having an off day. What were you saying?" She looked apprehensive, but answered anyway as she typed a name into the computer at the main desk.
"I was just asking what you think the party's going to be like tonight." I shrugged, and passed Monroe a chart.
"Might be fun." I answered.
"Might? I think its going to be a blast. You know how Nick and Frankie's parties always end up being." I nodded just as Lily's face lit up with excitement. "Ooh! You should dress up, and impress Nick tonight!" I raised an eyebrow.
"Why would I want to do that?" She rolled her eyes.
"Oh come on I can see that it bothers you that he doesn't pay you any mind anymore. Show him what he's missing." I gaped at her.
"It does not!"
"What does not?" I turned my head to see Nick standing behind me, and I tried to ignore the feeling of my stomach doing summersaults. Lily smirked and walked away leaving me and Nick alone, I turned back to him.
"Nothing. What are you doing here?"
"I'm meeting Marissa, and I thought I'd say what's up." he said referring to a cop at his precinct.
"Oh-" I was cut off by my stomach growling loudly, I looked down at it and Nick laughed.
"Hungry?" I blushed but laughed.
"Very. I didn't eat any breakfast." He nodded.
"Yea me too."
"Well where's Marissa now?" I asked trying to get off the topic of my hungry stomach.
"Talking to the lieutenant." I nodded.
"Wanna come with me to the cafeteria while you wait?" He looked like he was going to say yes but then hesitated.
"I cant I already said I'd take Marissa to lunch." I nodded, even though I felt my stomach churn as he said this and I suddenly lost my appetite. I pushed the up surd feeling away best I could but it kept coming back. Just then Marissa popped up beside him.
"Ready?" she asked he nodded and turned to me.
"I'll see you tonight." And with that he left with Marissa. Hmm, maybe I will consider Lily's suggestion…
I stood in front of my mirror putting in my hoop earrings into my first holes next to my diamond studs that were already placed in my second holes. I had on a pair of dark blue hip huggers with a black lace up corset. My hair was straitened and left down, so that it cascaded down my back. I had on smoky eyeliner, with mascara and some light lip gloss. Lily and Isabelle walked into my room and smiled.
"You look hot, Nick's not gonna know what hit him." Lily smiled, I rolled my eyes.
"I didn't do this for him."
"Mhmm." Isabelle muttered and I rolled my eyes. She still had her mind set that I loved him or something; which I don't. Once I was content with how I looked I turned to Lily and Isabelle.
"Where's Erin?"
"She's coming." Lily said and I nodded, before I glanced at the door. I could hear the music loud and clear through my closed door. It was already ten o'clock so I could only imagine how many people were here already.
"Ready?" I asked and they nodded. We turned and left my room and walked into the party. Just as I had expected there were a ton of people here already, most I knew and some I didn't.
"Looking hot Gracie!" Chris; one of Nick and Frank's friends shouted from the crowd. I smiled in response and turned my head to see who was standing next to him. Nick. He was wearing a pair of dark blue pants hanging loosely around his waist; it looked as if it would drop without the help from the belt he was wearing. He had on a dark blue Yankee jersey that hung open showing off his white tee underneath, his hair was spiked up slightly with the help of some gel, and he held a beer loosely between his fingertips. He was just looking at me and I looked back while Isabelle nudged me.
"I guess your plan worked he can't take his eyes off of you." I looked at her for a second before turning my head back to Nick, to see him still looking at me. I turned back around when Lily spoke,
"I'm going to go see where Frank is. I'll see you later." I nodded and turned to Isabelle.
"I'll be back I'm going to go get a beer, want one?" She nodded.
"Sure." I nodded and with that I set off toward the kitchen to get our beers.
"Hey." I turned to see Nick standing behind me.
"Hi." I muttered and then turned around resuming my walk to the kitchen,
"You look nice."
"Thanks." I muttered,
"So how have you been? We haven't talked for a while..." I pushed past some people, and answered shortly again.
"Fine."
"Why do I get the feeling you don't want to talk to me?" I rolled my eyes and answered sarcastically.
"Hmm… I don't know why are you getting that feeling?"
"Do you not want to talk to me?" I sighed and stopped walking.
"Why are you asking so many questions?"
"Why are you answering all my questions with a question?"
"Why are you questioning my questioning?" I asked but made a face trying to figure out if that made any sense at all; I shook my head and waited for his answer.
"Why do I want to kiss you right now?" I was taken aback by that and answered with a question that has been bugging me.
"I dont know. Why don't you go find Marissa?" Now he looked confused.
"What?" I rolled my eyes not wanting to keep up with this 'questioning game' any more and resumed my walk to the kitchen, and thank fully he didn't follow. I walked in to see no body in there but a guy who looked like he had way too much beer already but he was still going as he downed the cup he had in his hand.
"Hey, sexy." He slurred from behind me, I turned my head to see a guy that I didn't recognize, standing behind me.
"Hey." I muttered while grabbing two cups and walking over to the keg that was stashed in the corner or the kitchen.
"Wanna dance?" He slurred again,
"No, and I don't think your in any condition to." I said and tried to walk past him, but he grabbed my upper arm tripping, on air as he did so.
"Get off of me-" I was cut of by his lips coming crashing down onto mine. I dropped the beers causing them to spill everywhere and focused more on trying to get this slug off of me, I pushed him roughly but he threw me into the wall behind me making the table move slightly away from its previous position. Great I'm going to get raped in my own kitchen! He broke away, and all I wanted to do was drink a bottle of Listerine at that moment.
"Get the fuck off of me!" I screamed while punching him violently in the stomach, he groaned but just pushed me harder against the wall before I could run, while muttering a 'bitch'. Just then Chris and Nick walked into the room.
"Get the fuck off of her." Nick stated calmly, but in a deadly cold tone. The guy turned his head and looked Nick up and down before sneering,
"Go get your own whore." He turned back to me and I pushed my self harder against the wall wishing more than anything I would be able to sink through it, as he moved his hand to touch me, but before he could his weight was quickly lifted off of me and I looked to see him on the floor with Nick on top of him punching him in the face repeatedly, when he would fall back Nick would pull him back up by the collar of his shirt and punch him again. I had never seen Nick so angry in my life.
I ran over to Nick when I thought he was going to kill him from how bad he was beating him up, I touched Nick's arm lightly and he stopped punching the guy for a minute to look who it was, his face softened when he saw it was me.
"I think you got him…" I muttered and he glanced down at the kid on the floor getting up and turning to me. Chris gently took the guy from the floor and threw him out of the apartment.
"You okay?" he asked softly, and I nodded.
"Yea. Thanks." I said shortly and turned to walk away, forgetting about the beers that spilled everywhere. He grabbed my arm stopping me from going any where,
"What's wrong with you I just saved you from getting raped and you're just going to walk away?" I turned, still angry from him and Marissa -even though I shouldn't have been, he did just save me from getting raped…- and screamed the first thing that popped into my mind,
"Well what do you want a cookie?" His mouth dropped open and he stared at me, I could tell already there was going to be a fight.
"Why are you being such a bitch?!"
"Well if you don't like my bitchiness I'm sure you'll be happy with Marissa! Or how about Toni?" He threw his hands up in frustration.
"What does Marissa have to do with this?! This is the second time you brought her up!"
"Well she seems to be so important to you!"
"If this is about this afternoon I'm sorry I didn't jump at your invitation!" I opened my mouth to retort but found I had nothing to say to that, so I settled for a glare and shouted loudly,
"You're an asshole!" and stormed out of the kitchen and into the living room where everyone else was, and to my dismay he followed.
"I maybe an asshole but you're a stubborn bitch and to top it off your jealous!" he yelled as he stormed into the living room after me, neither of us aware that almost every ones eyes were now on us.
"Jealous? Why would I be jealous?!" He walked closer to me and yelled,
"Because you hate the idea that I might be with another girl! Even if we're not really together!" I felt my anger soar as he said this and I barley heard Vinny ask.
"Their not really together?" No one had the chance to answer him since I yelled at Nick again,
"Oh get off your high horse!" He rolled his eyes.
"Oh don't even try and deny it! That's why it bothered you so much that I went out with Marissa today!" Vinny cut in again, since no one answered him before and now his curiosity was at its highest,
"So they were never really together…?"
"Well it's not my fault I fell in love with you and you just so HAPPENED to be a jackass!" it suddenly got really quiet but neither me or Nick seemed to notice as he rolled his eyes and yelled back
"Oh so now I'm a jackass- wait what?" I rolled my eyes this time,
"What you don't comprehend the word jackass? Which don't you get the jack, or the ass?" Nick groaned.
"Not that smartass! Before that."
"Oh...I ... love you?" I asked but not really to him, more to myself. I gasped. "Oh my god... I love you." I looked at him shocked and he smiled. I looked up at him and he pulled me to him kissing me with out another word. It was the best kiss I had ever got, it wasn't to piss anyone off, or for an act it was just because he wanted to kiss me and I couldn't think of a better reason.
"Well… I guess that answers my question…" Vinny muttered while everyone clapped at our little show, some making wolf whistles and others awing. We pulled apart panting and I looked up at him as he whispered,
"I love you too." I smiled and kissed him again, wrapping my arms around his neck and pulling him closer. When we pulled apart again he said.
"And just for the record I really wasn't with Marissa today." I scrunched my eyebrows up in confusion,
"Then where were you?" he looked down before answering.
"I wanted to get you something because I have something to ask you…" he pulled out a small box from his pocket before continuing."I was planning on asking you at midnight-" he glanced at the clock, and so did I, 11:54 PM he looked back at me and smiled "right on time huh?" he opened the box and pulled out a small diamond ring, my breath caught in my throat and probably seeing my nervousness he continued.
"Don't worry it's not an engagement ring or anything… more like a promise ring. I wanted to know if you'd be my girl friend… for real this time." I smiled, how cute... he got me a promise ring… I crossed my arms over my chest and joked with a smile,
"Now does this time around come with any jealous bimbos or crazy monkeys?" he laughed and wrapped an arm around my waist.
"No… but I do think Frank has a friend with a chicken, so we might want to look out for that one…" I laughed and wrapped my arms around his neck,
"I'll keep that in mind… but I'd love to be your girlfriend Nick." he smiled and leaned down and kissed me again just as the clock struck twelve and everyone shouted.
"Happy New Year!" and what a happy new year it was…

Okay for those of you who want to see some of my writing again, if you read 18 then you'll see I came up with a summary and I've been working on it but it proved to be pretty hard to write so that ones going to go on hold for a little. BUT I was thinking and I like this story a lot and maybe I'll write a sequel to it. but not with Gracie and Nick, they'll be in it of course but its going to be focusing on another character, probably my second favorite girl character; Isabelle. So since I loved the characters and everything I might write a sequel, here's the possible summary: Isabelle is an expert on love. That is until it comes down to herself, she just can't seem to knock the idea that all men are slugs. So when her best friends dare her to go out with a guy for six months, will she be able to, with out falling in love first?
Ok let me know what you think, and thanks again for reading and reviewing this story.
