The Snow Has Always Made Me Cry

Samantha Danes walked furiously down the icy street, loudly muttering obscenities. Oblivious to the snow coating her long brown hair, or her completely numb fingers, she paused every few minutes to kick at an ugly rock. "Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!" No matter how hard she kicked that rock and scolded herself, she still couldn't forget the horrific scene that had taken place moments before. "Just because you think your life is horrible, doesn't mean you can ruin mine."

As she stepped around the corner of Jim's Familial Shoppe, she noticed a couple that were having a snowball fight in front of the town's library. She stopped as the hurt and despair started to wash over her. "I thought we were friends. You're like a sister to me. I thought you actually cared about me, but apparently I was wrong. You must hate me."

Tears streaming down her face, she started to run to get away from the awful voice in her head. Just as she got to her house, she saw him. Jake's familiar face was contorted into an unreadable expression as he saw his best-friend come sprinting past the library and onto their street. He winced as he remembered how he had completely humiliated her in front of everyone at the New Year's Eve party. "I'm don't even know who you are anymore. I'm not sure that I even want to know you."

Sam tried to wipe her face as Jake called out her name and started to walk towards her. Desperately wanting to be anywhere but there, she turned around and started to run back the way she had just came. Before she had even made one small step, she heard Jake scream out her name. The universe erupted into a thousand pieces as Jake saw the black truck come skidding around the corner, knocking down his livelong best-friend.

Still in shock, Jake started to run over to Sam's crumpled body. Lying on the snow-covered road, she looked like she had been trying to make a snow angel. Her curly brown hair contrasted darkly with the white ground. Jake bent down and tried to find her pulse. After finding the faintest of heartbeats, he drew his hand back and noticed the ruby wet spots on his hand and around her head. Grabbing his cell phone so he could dial 911, he barely heard the driver stumble out of the truck. "I'm sorry, I didn't see it. Is it ok?"

Jake finished the call and turned towards the driver. "It's not an IT, it's a HER." The man stumbled and Jake could smell the alcohol on his clothes. Trembling from the burst of rage that ripped through him, Jake started towards the drunken man. Before he could actually hit him, Jake came to an abrupt stop as he realized who the man was.

After spotting Sam's unconscious body lying on the ground, the man started to scream. "Sammie? Oh god, what did I do? Not my baby girl!" Jake just stood paralyzed, unable to say a word as Rick Danes began sobbing over his daughter's bloody body.
