Modern Romance

The loud shriek of laughter coming from the excited girl could have carried for miles. She stomped her feet on the ground and clapped her hands gleefully. My mother held a wavering sort of polite smile, but I could not help but to raise a quizzical brow. I stared at her as if she were slightly deranged, which she surely was at the current moment. I quickly cleared my throat and poured more tea into my cup. As I did so, I glanced across from me to find the boy giving the same astonished look to the giggling girl. His eyes met mine for a second. For that one second, time stopped before us. We both felt embarrassed for her, and we both smiled weakly at her laughter. For once, he and I were on a mutual agreement. Time began again. And that second between us faded as fast as it came...
