Fussing Over Carrots
" I don't see cawots in there!" My niece Felicity held up my ring to her eye.
" It don't taste like cawots eithor!"
Both my sister and me shrieked. We turned around to find Felicity chewing the ring.
" Felicia honey! Give that ring back to Aunt Celeste! It's not a toy!"
My sister, Alexia, took the ring out of her mouth and gave it back to me.
The last thing I need is my niece getting surgery for ring removal in her stomach!
I sprayed it with my diamond shiner, rubbed it off gently with a silk cloth, put it in the blue case and went over to pick up Felicia. She immediately starts playing with my hair.
" So how are things in New York?" I ask my sister.
She shrugs
" Fine I guess. I'm putting Felicia in ballet. She does pirouettes all the time and I think she should get all the practice she can get!" she laughed.
" How's your kitchen doing?"
" It's almost done! That bloody designer just keeps adding details here and there so I finally said enough or else we would go over our budget"
" Rachelle taught me to popoley label jaws!" Felicia exclaimed out of nowhere.
Both Alexia and me start laughing.
" It's Rachael honey. She was teaching her how to properly glue metal labels on jars" she explains to me.
" That's what me say!" Felicia shouted.
" Shhh! You're going to wake grannie!" I say to Felicia, putting my finger to my mouth.
" About grannie…" Alexia started.
" She's fine now, it was a lot worse before," I say " Oh my lord! We have to book you in the Grand Plaza now or we won't get in for the next twenty years!" I imitated my mom.
Alexia burst out laughing.
" It's like you're getting married now" she gasps out.
" I know! I was better off telling her about it ten years from now"
Alexia nodded. She knew how I felt. She got proposed at eighteen and mom freaked out even worse because they wanted to marry right away. My sister ended up marrying in secret. Our mother went ballistic and has keeping her eye on me very closely.
Eighteen is a bit better though don't you think? GOD LUKE!
Felicia slips out of my arms and waddles towards a big brown bear she spotted at the corner of my room. She shrieks in glee when she touches it.
" Beor soft!" she exclaimed.
It was suppertime when "grannie" decided to get up from her nap. She had been taking one everyday since my "outburst".
My family sat down at the dining table. Everyone was there, even my father, except my other older sister. She was in Spain.
" Did you see Auntie Celia's cawots?" asked Felicia to my mother.
My mother got confused. Alexia and me started to laugh all over again.
" It's karats Felicia, not carrots!" Alexia pinched her cheek. My mother and father laughed.
" She's a pretty little thing Alexia," My father says " She has the same face as her mother"
Then we all talked about what nose, eyes, ears, mouth Felicia had inherited from her parents.
" She's got the stubbornness from her mother" I said.
Alexia punched me gently on the arm.
The doorbell rang.
" I'll get that!" my father said jumping to his feet.
We heard a small commotion and my father saying " Harvard eh?" over and over.
It was, of course, Luke.
My dad entered the room with a " it's Harvard Boy!"
Luke followed closely behind smiling nervously. I grinned.
" Hello! Sorry to interrupt, I should have come at a later time" He said politely.
He winked at me.
" Auntie? Is he the one who gave you the cawots?" Felicia whispered loudly to me.
Everyone laughed. Luke looked lost.
" Yes, he is Felicia" I say.
" Grab yourself a seat boy! Join us!" my father booms out.
Luke mumbles something like how he was imposing on their supper and would be rude.
" Nonsense darling!" this time it's my mother that speaks.
Luke nods and slips into a seat between Felicia and me. Felicia starts poking him.
" You're not made of cawots are youuu?" Felicia sings out.
Luke laughs.
" No I'm not. Who's this? Your niece?" He asks me.
" Yeah, her name is Felicity, but she wants to be called Felicia"
Luke turns to Felicia
" You have a pretty name Felicia"
" I know!" Felicia chirps.
We all laugh.
" I was going to call your dad later on Luke," my father started " I was going to invite you and your family over for supper one of these days! I finally got some time off, hopefully your father has time off too?"
" Actually yes," Luke says to him " He just got back from business in Japan"
" Excellent! You tell him to call me to figure out a time" my father says happily.
" I sure will Mr. Vandelaak, I won't forget" Luke nodded to my father.
" How's your mother?"
" She seems a bit better, but I think she's stressing out even more" I say.
Luke and I were at the movie theatre, waiting patiently for the movie to start.
We were watching " X-Men: The Last Stand" or something like that. It was Luke's turn to pick a movie and well…since when do guys ever pick chick flicks?
" Sorry for all the trouble I caused" Luke turns to me and flashes his foxy signature smile.
" You better be sorry" I laugh out jokingly.
" It was partly your fault anyway" Luke retorted.
" Whaaa?!" I flick him.
" You turned all "oh I don't believe you and you don't truly love me" " he imitates me.
I blushed.
" Well, if you were in my place how do you think you would have reacted? I thought you were just using me, other than that I thought you were too perfect to be true and so on…" I trail on.
" You know I would never use you! I love you too much for that"
" I know…now"
I kiss him on the cheek.
" So are you ready for the big day? Ha!" I change the subject.
" Somewhat…"
" I'll cheer you on like crazy!" I mime being a cheerleader.
" I'll pretend I don't know you then!" he moves away from me.
" LUKE! You're sooo mean!" I fold my arms and pout.
Luke laughs at me.
" I'm sorry, I don't mind you cheering me"
" Good!"
" …As long as you're not too loud for anyone to hear"
" AARRG!"
Luke pats me on my head. I hit his hand away.
" I'm not a bloody dog!" I fight to keep his hand away.
He stops. I sigh with relief.
" So how come you're niece was asking if I was made out of carrots?" He turns to look at me. I laugh.
" I was telling Alexia how much karats the diamond was and Felicia mistook me for saying carrots" I grin.
Luke shakes his head.
The room suddenly grows dark. The movie begins to start.
I put my hand into Luke's pocket and start rummaging around.
" What do you want pickpocket?" Luke says, eyes still on the screen.
" I wanted to see if you had any carrots in your pocket" I snigger.
" Oh shut up!"
I lay my head on his shoulder and we began to watch the movie.
