I wrote this maybe ten minutes ago. There ARE spaces between people, and what fills those spaces tends to be more painful than the people themselves.
Things go unspoken in the spaces between
All those things we said
The hurtful things we didn't mean
The things I hope you did
I'm holding our memories close
Before they disappear
Because I know my memory goes
Year and again year
So I'll be content with an occasional smile
Maybe I'll conjure a laugh
Because I know that after a while
The years will go too fast
We won't catch on
If we don't keep it close
And those memories- gone
Before anyone knows
And maybe I'll remember
An idea, a lost dream
And maybe you'll remember
Just what you meant to me
But the chances are pretty low
And I don't expect to hope too much
So I'll let my secret hopes go
And hope you don't expect too much
But I guess it's all okay
Just hope I don't break before the end
Before night becomes the day
And lose the dream of what
We
Once
Had
Been
