Sins in Heaven
Chapter One: The Lord Shall Return?
"Have you ever wondered if God was…well…physically good-looking? I mean like…hot and sexy."
That would be Liger talking, and Mia and Liger had conversations about this several times – just not a topic like this. It was five in the morning, and Liger couldn't sleep because of her nightmares. Actually, they didn't know what it was called because Liger would scream and scratch herself in her own dreams. It was scary for the fact that as the oldest sister, Mia had to protect her younger sibling. It happened to Liger not just once or twice but daily now. It was almost every other night. Just to get her back to sleep, their mom would have to give Liger sleeping pills, but they just kept coming back no matter what. After that ridiculous question, Mia turned her head to the side and stared at her sister. They were lying in the grass looking at the twinkling stars which they did almost every night after Liger would have her 'nightmares'. In some weird way, the two of them found it comforting to be in their background staring something that was more than a thousand miles away.
"Not…particularly," Mia answered as if there wasn't a 'God', "He is God, y'know. I expect him to be average-looking just not sexy."
Liger just nodded her head biting her bottom lip. She sat herself up and stared at the sun that was just beginning to rise. Small rays of light began to fill the streets that were still sleeping peacefully.
"C'mon, Liger, let's go inside and get ready for school. We can always talk about God at church unless you have more perverted fantasies to say," Mia said grinning widely at her when Liger only scoffed.
"Shaddup! And…they're not fantasies. They're just thoughts…,"
Only rolling her eyes, the older sister got up only to leave Liger behind.
When the clock struck 11:45 AM, the bells rang and most of the students headed to the cafeteria where they ready to see what gross-out food they were going to have next. Mia sighed and slammed her head into the books at the library. Her final examinations tests were coming up, and it was her senior year. There large book piles with different subjects piled all around her. She needed to know practically everything for her final exams. It was then when Liger ran into the library screaming for Mia. She held her overly large purse in one hand and a bag of chips in the other. Her sneakers or converses were untied and nearly tripped over her own two feet.
"Mia! Mia! Mia!"
Mia only slinked into her chair hoping to be un-noticed by her oddly short sister. Finally after two minutes of screaming, Mia gave up. She just praised to God that the librarian was out to lunch. Ms. Patterson would have their rumps if Liger just continued to shout like that.
"Dammit, what do you need this time?"
"There you are! I've been looking all over for you!" Liger said as she curved around the table seeing Mia a tad bit frustrated.
"Yeah, I can tell."
"I got a B in math today!"
"You screamed my name all over campus, just for that?"
"…Yes," Liger said blankly as if there was no problem in screaming like a banshee in a library.
Liger pulled up a seat and munched on her sour cream and onion chips. She chewed with her mouth open just to be annoying to Mia. Snatching the bag away aggressively, Mia glared at her only sister and said,
"Stop it! You're embarrassing me!"
"Whatever. Hey, did you see that hot guy in math today?"
All Mia could afford was a raised eyebrow at her sister but sighing, she shut her books to give Liger some attention.
"I'm a teacher's aid in your math class…and I don't look at guys 2 years younger than me, Liger."
"Jeez, someone needs to be screwed."
"Just shut up already. You're a pain in the ass crack did you know that?"
"Ass crack?! I so resent that," Liger said crossing her arms and sticking her tongue out at her sister.
"Sometimes, I wonder if I'm related to you. I mean, since you're the blonde one being the idiotic one in the family, and I being intelligent one…get what I mean?"
Mia just leaned into her chair, crossed her arms, and smirked at her sister.
"Hey! No fair! You're just jealous because I'm cute, and you're not."
With that done, Liger turned to the side of her chair, crossed her arms, and huffed. Mia just stood up and grabbed her book. She leaned into her sister's ear saying,
"And, how many boyfriends have you had?"
"Fuck you," Liger said shooting a dirty look at Mia.
Mia chuckled and shook her head. It was interesting to see how stubborn her sister was.
"Meet me in the student parking lot after school, okay? If you're late, I'm leaving without you."
"Suuurrreeee," Liger said dragging on the word and putting her blonde head on the desk.
Mia then walked off to go to her locker.
It always seemed the two sisters never got along because they had petty arguments, and sure, it seemed like they were total and complete opposites, so why not? Liger was the loud and outgoing one. Sure Liger seemed obnoxious, but keeping her head held up high was the best thing she could do. Liger had always thought she was a freak for her dreams. Her sister always told her that if she kept calling herself a freak, she'd be happy to take her dirty gym socks and stuff it in her mouth and tape it shut. Instead of making Liger feel better, Mia just made her scared which got rid of her depression in a way. Mia was different. She was shy and quiet, and she only seemed loud because of her arguments with her sister. Mia was always or it appeared to be perfect in a word that Liger would always say. Liger would always be the girl that wanted to have fun. Mia just wanted to be able to pass all her classes. Mia just happened to think the complete opposite about herself.
After school, Mia walked to the car with her keys in her right hand and her purse in the other. The Student Parking Lot was right next to the Staff Parking Lot. The area was crowded with students. Some of them had their boyfriends or girlfriends making out with them in their car. Mia just rolled her eyes. She drove a dark green, SUV Mazda with leather interior and a stereo that would blow a head off. She slowly set her backpack in the backseat and then looked around with her emerald green eyes.
Liger came trotting down to the parking lot singing to a Green Day song. She set her stuff in the back and plopped into the front by hopping to the front seat from the back. Just as Mia was pulling out, her sister shoved in a Green Day CD into her car stereo.
"Hey! Turn that crap off!" Mia said in disgust.
"You're a loser, y'know that? Green Day is the best thing since they invented sliced bread!"
"Well, this is my car, so I can listen to anything I want to. So either take the CD out or I will, and I'll take it out and throw it at your head."
"You're mean!" Liger pouted as she ejected her CD.
"So…what else's new?"
After 5 minutes of silence in the vehicle, Liger turned to look at her sister. Mia sat up straight and kept her almond shaped-eyes on the road. Mia's features were more mature than Liger. Liger had that round, innocent, sky blue eyes and slender pale cheeks. Also, Liger was a little bit on the short side, and Mia was well…taller than her sister that's for sure.
"How's Julian?" Liger asked curiously at her sister staring at the silver Volkswagen in front of them while they were on the free-way.
"He's good. He's coming by after dinner to do some studying together," Mia replied calmly.
Julian was Mia's boyfriend. Liger was very fond of him and most importantly, approved of him even her parents. Julian was the type of guy that was an all-around nice guy. Despite the fact that he was a jock, he was still 'Liger-stamped-approved' even though Mia didn't really need her younger's sister approval just to date a guy. Julian was taller than Mia, but he was only off by a couple of inches. He had nice brown hair that he usually spiked up a couple of times for a 'special occasion' with Mia. Laughing quietly, Mia remembered the fond memory when Liger walked in on them kissing with her friends. They were body-on-body. His strong hands were about to make their way to Mia's bra until Liger opened the door with her friends that had gathered in the room gawking at them. Mia was shirtless, and Julian well…shirtless, pantsless, and he kind of lost his boxers somewhere along the way. Liger would not stop laughing and pointing at them. It took her almost 6 months to forget about that incident.
"Heh heh, oh, it'll be more than studying, Mia."
Chuckling, Mia shook her head, but her eyes were still on the road.
"Who knows…maybe," Mia replied with a light giggle.
Liger rolled her eyes and snickered quietly in her seat.
When Mia pulled up to their house, a red car was blocking the driveway. Liger had fallen asleep and her head leaned on the window. Mia stopped her car and gently pulled the key out of the ignition. Immediately, Liger jumped and woke up staring at the red car.
"Wha-? Huh? What gives, man?" Liger said rubbing her eyes and yawning tiredly.
"Someone's here. Do you recognize the car?" Mia asked unbuckling her seat belt and opening the car door.
"Not really. Are you sure it's not Julian?"
"Positive. Julian doesn't drive a red car…plus…he's supposed to be at track practice. I haven't had time to spend with him since he's been having practices most of the time, and I've been trying to study for exams."
"You never know until you find out..."
Mia glanced at her sister and then back at the small, red car.
"Right..," Mia replied to her younger sister sarcastically.
Grabbing their backpacks, they headed to the front door. Before Liger could even reach for the knob, the door just opened. The two sisters found them staring at a woman dressed in black and white. She also wore a necklace of the cross.
"Bless me!" the nun cried in amazement.
"A nun drives a red car? What gives?!" Liger said stunned.
"Awesome!" Liger shouted in excitement already getting hyped up just 5 minutes later after she had woken up from her nap. Mia just cut in front of Liger and said,
"Can I help you?"
"Oh, no, dear…perhaps you should come in and talk with your parents."
"I think I should…"
The two sisters dropped their backpacks and walked through the living room that had a leather couch and loveseat. The giant wide-screen television was placed in the middle of the room that hung above the fire place. Just a couple of feet right of it was a piano that Mia had played several a times when she had nothing better to do. The curtains had been drawn back to reveal the sunlight. The giant window in the living room revealed their front yard with Mia's parked SUV outside. Next to the marvelous, giant window was an art canvas especially for Liger. Liger always had the need to draw something whether it would be something from her dreams or a potato chip under the couch. Mia had then entered the kitchen where their parents were having coffee. She stared at them confused. Her instincts told her that something was wrong.
"Does someone care to explain why there is a nun in the house?"
Their parents looked at Mia surprisingly as if they wouldn't be back for another hour. Mia looked back and forth at her mom and dad.
"Well, we have something to tell you…," Her father spoke in a slight whisper. Mia could tell that by his tone of voice something was terribly wrong.
"I'm sure you do."
Liger came in staring at Mia and said,
"Mom! Dad! There's a friggin' nun in the house! And, she drives a red car! It's RED! The nun's driving the devil's car! It's the devil's car! That's waaayyy better than Oprah, Mi."
You could always count on Liger to brighten the mood with her optimistic-self; however, Mia still stared those green eyes of hers at her parents waiting for some explanation. Since when does a nun come to their house? More importantly, how do their parents know her? Their family went to church and all, but Mia had turned away from that Christian faith a while back. She just couldn't put her faith into a book that had preached that there was a God out there. Yes, Mia did believe that there was a greater force out their, but the bible...it was just nonsense to Mia.
"Diana, shall you tell them or I?" Their father responded holding Diana's hand in one and in the other a coffee mug.
"No, dear, I will."
Mia crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow glancing back at Liger a couple of times waiting for her mother to say something. Liger just stood there quietly looking at her older sister intently.
"Well, girls, there's no way to make this easy, so I'm just going to come out and say it."
The two sisters nodded their head in agreement and stared at their mother intently – all eyes were on her.
"You're adopted…"
Liger's jaw immediately fell in shock.
"You mean that Mia and I are not related?! That can't be! Do you guys know how much we act like sisters?! And, you're telling us we're not related?"
Mia took a step back and thought this over a moment.
Their father raised his hand gently as if telling Liger to back off a little.
"Whoa, slow down there baby-girl…your not related to Mia because you are by blood. Your DNA might not match ours, but we're still family. I mean…we live under the same roof don't we?"
Mia was rather disturbed by being adopted. Actually, it wasn't the fact she was adopted. It was the fact that her parents never told them this. Mia's 18, and she's about to graduate and go off to college. Not only, does this add more stress to herself, Liger will want to go off in an adventure to find their real parents. If they're dead, Liger would still want to see their graves. Mia quietly backed away from the room and walked up stairs to Mia and Liger's shared room.
"Mia, where are you going?" Diana shouted watching her oldest daughter walk away.
"To my room…I just need to think…," Mia replied in a harsh tone, but it send out the message that she didn't want to be bothered.
Liger stood there excited. She had no clue what Mia was angry about, but then, Liger almost forgotten about the nun.
"Dad, what's up with the nun? How does she know us, and we don't?"
"Well, honey," Their mom responded slowly, "She's the one that helped us adopt you and Mia. Why don't you go into the living room and talk to the nun? We'll give you two some time to talk while your father and I try to sort some things out."
"Okie Dokey, Mommy," Liger said cheerfully, hopefully to brighten the house up.
Liger walked to the living room and plopped herself onto the loveseat. The nun had been sitting on the main couch and smiled at Liger.
"Child, how much have you grown. You were only one when I saw you, and you're sister was three at the time."
Nodding her head, Liger looked at the sister and said, "What is your name, sister?"
"Sister Mary, m'dear."
The old lady had wrinkles that Liger could just count them by sitting there. Although, there was something familiar about her eyes and voice. It was like Liger had remembered her from a dream of some sort.
"Sister Mary, eh? How convenient…so how did you find us, sister?" Liger was polite and sat lady-like trying to use her best manners as possible. Usually, Mia and Liger would look like lazy pigs together on a couch which wasn't a very pretty sight to see.
"Well, it was years ago, but I remember it just like it happened 5 minutes ago…that was the day of the devil. Most certainly, every religious person would know it."
"Well," Liger began in a curious voice, "I never had, but could you care to fill me in?"
"Oh! Yes! Child! Let's see…I'm sure you know how the bible goes in the very beginning. God created the earth, light, and his most beloved creatures."
Liger nodded her head listening very closely even for the small intricate details.
"On the first day, light was created, and on the fifth day, water and birds were created. Keep that in mind dear, child because you will see the meaning to this. Well, you were born on Monday on the first hour of the first minute of the first second which is rather odd, but so is your sister except, she was born on the fifth day of the fifth hour of the fifth minute of the fifth second. At least, that's the exact time that said on your birth certificates. Now, the day that you had been left in my care was the day no religious person could forget. That day, there were terrible hurricanes, typhoons, monsoons, wild fires, thunderstorms, tornados, hail, sleet, snowstorms, earthquakes, and volcanoes erupting. This happened all over the world at the same time. In fact, we're still recovering from it. I believe that you and your sister are a prophecy of some sort. In statistics -"
"WHOA! Wait there! You're a nun…you're not suppose to base you're faith off statistics," Liger said. She wasn't trying to be rude. Hell, the story that the nun was telling was good and interesting and all, but…it all meant something to Liger.
"Yes, well dear, we all need an explanation sometime even if you're not supposed to be questioning God and his makings. Anyways…where was I…oh! Yes! The statistics… that day, no child was born alive. When mothers would have their babies on that day, they would die during their pregnancy and the mothers included. I was quite surprised that the two of you survived from all that havoc, but it is how I found you today. I knew Diana and Luke for a while now. What's quite interesting was…your mother was one of the women that had given birth on that day."
Liger believed this story - no matter how crazy it sounded. It would explain her dreams a little bit, but there was still much more to be undiscovered.
"Wait, I thought you said the mothers that had given birth that day…or tried to died along with their young?"
The nun nodded her head gravely. Her nice and friendly features had disappeared, and the nun had this face of respectfulness and pity all in one for those that had died that day.
"Yes, but your mother miraculously survived. I believe the only woman to have survived."
'This is too insane!' Liger thought to herself still paying attention to the nun, 'I so have to tell Mia this.'
"Okay, and why are you here today, sister?"
"Well, dear, today's is the anniversary of where I found you on the church's doorstep."
"So you don't know who my real parents are?"
"Oh, no, dearie. I don't know who your parents are except for the fact that you were just left on my doorstep."
The nun decided to leave attend the 6 o'clock mass. Liger showed her out the door and went back to the couch to paint a bit – just to get her head straight and think through this.
Sister Mary had left a card with the Church's name and address on it. Liger's parents had gone to bed, and she had been up 'til two in the morning thinking about it over and over again. Sometimes, it would get too quiet that Liger would hear Mia on the phone talking to either Julian, or her best friends, Danielle and Nick. The words and thoughts that clung to Liger the most was the fact that what if Mia and Liger were part of the Bible's tale?
