As children, the sun and trees were enough
A crisp fall day and pile of raked leaves were all that we needed
Dirt paths and bicycles
Grassy hills to roll down
Stars seemed so distant and bright
We loved life and there was so much ahead of us
Each night, warm beds with soft pillows
And bedtime stories always chased the monsters away

Life goes on…

Children grow up
Learn new things in school
Realize that reading and writing
Are important too
You are taught to play nice
To treat everyone as you wished to be treated
Sometimes they did…
…sometimes they didn't
But bedtime stories would still
Always chase the monsters away

Life goes on…

Children grow into adolescents
While the world becomes a bit more clear
Sometimes there is more work than play
Your peers can be harsh
Brutal at times
But this was to be expected
However, in the end
You could always count on those bedtime stories
To chase your worries away

Life goes on…

As a young person now
There are greater expectations
Graduation and college are just the first steps
Sometimes your best is no longer good enough
Rejection is dog-eared in your dictionary
Moving on is the only way to go
Bedtime stories are becoming less effective

Life goes on…

Now an adult
It is survival of the fittest
No one ever got ahead in life by playing "nice"
It's a dog eat dog world
And you do not want to be eaten
You can only depend on yourself
Looking out for number one
Bedtime stories seem like a waste of time

Life goes on…

Years have passed
Wise and old…
…or so you are told
Reality sets in
Life is not all that is was cracked up to be
We need more in life than sunshine and soft pillows
Some things we are never prepared for
Hope and dreams die with age
And bedtime stories
Certainly
Don't scare away all the monsters anymore
