Prologue

Eleanor

I liked the rain; I can honestly say I did. Especially when you live in a desert and the only rain you ever get is the old dusty shower that pours it last droplets on you. So, I was the one who always changed the channel to see the weather every single morning, as I got ready for school, those four years of it that always seemed to faze me whenever I thought about it.

I was not your typical high school girl.

On second thought, maybe I was.

On a third thought, I wasn't.

I was the girl you saw walking to school, with no friend beside her chatting away like radio, the one who always sat in the back of the class, staring holes through the walls of the chalkboard. The one that sat with a few friends that pitied her at lunch. In truth, I didn't decide to be all boring that way. I mean, they were the ones that rejected me all because of my stupid older sister.

"Oh, the other Bennett?"

"I didn't know she had a sister…."

But anyway, that's a story for a different day. In the present moment I am stuck.

"Stuck" you say?

Yes, stuck.

In the middle of nowhere. With no gas in this worthless scrap of metal they call a truck.

I've already tried banging on the steering wheel, slamming my foot on the pedal, and of course kicking the trucks old rusty wheels more than once. I even tried lifting up the cover, and boy that was my sorriest attempt yet. If only my dad had taught me something about mechanics…oh well. And of course I tried the engine, that's the first thing you would do right?

But anyway, I'm a damsel in distress now, with no phone, and it didn't look like anyone was going to drive by soon.

The last car that did had a butt sticking out of the passenger window and I don't really know why, I guess they didn't stop at the gas station, but I covered my eyes in case of some flying doo-doo.

My family wouldn't worry; I mean they would if they were at home. My parents went on a business trip to Hawaii the bastards. I honestly don't believe the tale of that type of business either. Oh and my sister? She's probably at some party letting some random guy feel her up or something like that. My older brother was in Colorado, studying to become a doctor of some sort.

While I loved my family most of the time, I hated them right now. Perfect timing dear parents!

So how did I get here anyway? Wrong turn, simple as that. Or so I think.

And no, I'm not walking! The last exit is miles away and the sun is beginning to set anyway. It could be dangerous; I mean what kinda weirdos might offer me a ride or do something worse? I'd have better chances in the car anyway. Eventually someone will show up right?

Funny, as soon as I thought that guess what?

A car pulled up.
