He breaks through stale water,
scales glistening
in the afternoon sun
before he plunges back
into the wind-stirred lake.
His tail flecks droplets
onto the surface,
creates shimmering waves
that form patterns around
water-bugs and dragonflies,
and splinters a vague reflection
in the stale water.
