Note: If you haven't figured it out yet, All incantations are Latin words for their functions. Volo is speed in latin, Bellator Phasmatis , Suffragium mihi is Fighting Spirit, Aid me, so on and so on.

The stone behemoth lunged at me.

"Contego Mihi!"

A translucent dome of energy sprouted from the ground, shielding me and Vol. The stone beast smashed into it, falling to peices. "You son of a bitch! What was that for?"

The man stood upright. He pulled back his hood, revealing his face. A chill shot through my spine.

He was a Lamia. The man was shaved bald, with symmetric purple designs going across his head. His eyes were glowing red, his canines exaggerated and glistening with blood.

"Bastard! You're a Lamia!"

The Lamia decided to respond. His voice was slightly high and scratchy, with a kind of hiss to it. "Child, do not refer to me in that Ancient Tounge. Use your own."

"You want me to call you a vampire? I'm not gonna give you the pleasure."

The Lamia stood upright. "No pleasure on my part. It is simply formality, young one. But you ought to do what you are told, especially when it is from someone more powerful than you."

More powerful? "You don't know what you're talking about. I'm the best magist in my class."

"Oh, how nice. A meal that I'll have to earn, then," The Lamia said, and leaped into the air. I slid off my horse, pulling some magic to the surface for an attack. The Lamia missed me by a foot.

"Incendia Profusum!" I yelled, lining up my arm with the Lamia's quickly moving body. A stream of fire erupted from my palm, barely missing him. The Lamia screamed, fire their weakness. It's scream was worse than that of a banshee, wicked and high.

"You will pay for your arrogance, child!"

I knew that the Fire Stream would work on him as well as I hoped. I had never fought a Lamia before, so I knew no other useful attacks other than that one, at least none that I could use without my staff. But, of course, I was going to a party during late November, I felt secure with a dagger and did not bring my staff along with me.

I needed it, thought. "Silens Voco, Staff!" I yelled, pulling my dagger out of my pocket.

"What was that, Magist? A cry for help to the spirits, eh?"

I prepared myself for another spell. "Reproba Bellator Phasmatis , Suffragium mihi!" For a moment, I thought I had said the incantation wrong. Then, my hand, on it's own, pulled my dagger out of it's sheath. My body acted with it, getting into a fighting stance. The warrior spirit was in me.

He lunged at me. I bent back, barely dodging him. I retaliated with a quick cut across his back. He tried to strike my neck, I blocked it with my right arm, kicking him into the air. My body couldn't take this for much longer, and neither could the pseudospirit. My moves became slower until I regained control. I struck my palm against his chest, pushing him a good five feet away from me. "Contego Mihi!"

Another dome shield surrounded me, but I had moved away from Vol. Luckily, Lamia had no taste for other animals.

The Lamia beat against the shield. "Let me in, Weakling! Face the consequences of circumstance!"

"Hell no!"
The Lamia sighed, preparing to spellbind. Then, I heard a whistling.

I spotted a distant object, long and brown. It sped down the street, hovering three feet off of the ground. It smashed into the shield with unbelievable force, breaking through and stopping right over me. It rotated, facing vertical instead of horizontal, and lowered to the ground. It was my staff.

The staff was made of wood. It was polished and varnished, long, sturdy, and had an iron center. It was a long and thin staff, coming to a kind of lighting-bolt shape at the top end.

"Cancer Contego."

The shield dissipated. The Lamia smiled. "Ready to face me?"

I laughed. "You should start running." I quickly opened with a barrage of physical attacks. I struck him once, twice, three times with the broad side of the staff, and punched him square in the jaw. I held the staff where the large top shape met with the shaft with both hands. "Say your prayers, Lamia," I said, pulling some magic to the surface. "Incendia Everto!"

Magic began to whirl around me. The magic turned to fire.

"Offendo!"

The fire shot forward, engulfing the Lamia in blinding flames. It screamed again, even worse than before. I clutched my ears, trying to block out the dying scream. Then, it was silent.

I looked. The Lamia had died like how they did in the stories- they simply turned to dust.

I collapsed in the street. I had used a lot of magic tonight which wasn't a good thing. For one thing, my parents might notice (especially after I would probably have a mystery hangover), and also tomorrow was the exams- and then Team Assingment.
