Chapter One: The Beginning
Stories usually start at the beginning, but I can't say when that is. It could be when I was born or maybe even the day he left, but I can't really say. Maybe I'll start with that day three years ago, the day I lost all freedom, the day I was kidnaped! Well, maybe I wasn't kidnaped, but it sure felt like it to me. Earlier that day was study hall. Kailee, Jena, and I were in it. They are my best friends.
Kailee is Caucasian and has short brown hair down to her shoulders. She has brown eyes and wears glasses. Then there's Jena. She is Caucasian. Her dishwater blonde hair is down to her elbows, and her eyes are blue.
As for me, I have red hair that is a bit past my shoulders, with bangs in my face. I usually have it in a messy bun. My eyes are blue and my skin is Caucasian with freckles. We were all thirteen years old, in seventh grade , and lived in Tennessee. Study hall was the last class of the day and it was also a Friday so we got a free-day.
"So guys, wanna have another three-day sleep over?" Jena asked.
"Sure, but we're not watching that movie we watched the last five times." Kailee said.
"Hey it's a good movie!" Jena said with a laugh.
"So are you in Lu?" Kailee asked as she elbowed me in the side. I hadn't really been paying attention because I was doing homework.
I looked up from my work and stuttered "Not this weekend . . . I-I have something to do."
"Yeah, I bet it's that something that you won't tell us about . . . " Kailee grumbled.
"Lu, come on tell us! It's driving me crazy! I want to know what the hell it is you go and do every two weeks!" Jena nagged.
"It's nothing . . . " I growled defensively.
"If it is nothing then why can't you tell us?" Kailee said. Finally, the bell rang and I practically ran out of the room. I wanted to tell them what it was that I did, but it totally contradicted one of our friendship vows. The vow was that we wouldn't ever become popular in any way.
After I got off the bus, I walked down the alley between the apartments to get to mine on the end. It was dark outside due to the storm that was said to come. I looked up at the darkening sky when I heard the loud crash of thunder. At that time I felt a drop of rain land on my forehead. I looked forward and continued to walk.
By the time I got home it was pouring and I was soaked. My sweat shirt was around my waist so the rain had pounded on my bear skin. My black tank top was clinging to me and my wet jeans made my legs itch.
When I walked through the door to my apartment, I stood in bewilderment. There were two strangers standing in my front room and my mom was signing her name on a piece of paper. One of the men walked over to me, looking me up and down. It made me blush as I thought, pervert.
I dropped my backpack by the closet without looking away and snipped "Who are these guys?" My voice was coated with aversion.
"We're here to take you to the School of Obedience. It's a place for teens like you. Ones that get in fights and have anger problems." the man who had come toward me said.
"I don't have anger problems!" I protested threateningly. The man smirked as he took my arm.
"Your mother just signed the paper. You're coming with us." the other man said as he put the paper in his pocket.
"Mom!" I protested as I pulled my arm away. My mom just picked up her pack of cigarets and went out on the back porch. She only smoked if she was sad or stressed. The man grabbed my upper arm and began to walk out the door. I planted my feet refusing to go. Then the other man walked over. He grabbed my arm harder than the other man had. He also pulled me with more force.
"Let me go!" I yelled as I pulled back. My arm felt like it was going to get ripped out of the socket. He then put his arm around my waist and picked me up. I clawed at his arm, drawing a little blood. I pounded on his back as he carried me out of the building. One may think it hard to carry a thirteen-year-old but I was small for my age, vertically challenged if you will.
Once outside the man put me in the back seat of a blue car. Before I could try to escape, he slammed the door in my face. I yanked at the handle but the child lock was on. The drive to the School of Obedience was rather boring. I didn't know anything about it. I just couldn't believe my mom would send me away. She was really sad when my sister moved out. Mom was nice and happy most of the time. Sometimes she would be depressed for no reason, as if she was remembering something she'd rather forget. As for my father, he left when I was really young. All of my memories of him were coated with a thick layer of haze.
"So, how long am I to attend your stupid school?" I asked with my arms folded, my voice sounding very displeased.
"As long as it takes. I think you'll be there for a while." the man in the passenger seat said. He was the one I clawed. As he spoke, he put his hand on his arm.
"Fuck you." I said with a glare.
"I recommend you not to talk like that at the school. Nothing good will come of it for you." the driver advised.
"What are you gonna do, spank me?" I mocked. I thought that they couldn't do anything to me. It would be child abuse and they'd get arrested. I mean a young teen would never think that they could design a correctional facility and have it be unknown to any law enforcement?
"Believe me once you get there, you won't talk like that any more . . . " the man pulled his sleeve down over the scratches. I was silent the rest of the time. I was also kind of scared. His last comment had more meaning to it than I knew. I was destined to find out the hard way.
The drive took well more than seven hours. I fell asleep with my head crooked to the side. The next day I woke up in what looked like a cell room. I got off the bed I was lying on and went over to the door. There was a small window and I looked through it. The hallway looked old and the lights were blinking on and off every so often. It was also cold, like in a basement.
I was standing on my tiptoes to see through the window. Then suddenly my view was blocked by a man's face. He then came into the room. I backed away as I tried to hide how scared I was.
"So, finally awake are we?" The expression of his face was ominous but even so he sounded familiar, along with his face.
"Who the hell are you?" I demanded scornfully.
"Hm, joy. Another foulmouthed brat." he said with disdain.
"Bite me." I stated with a glare.
"See it's saying things like that, that landed you here. Though not only your quite unpleasant speech but also your aggressive actions." he informed dully. After that statement, I understood why I was sent there.
I was at school eating lunch. The boy that bullied me every day walked by and did the ever so unique loser sneeze. All his friends at his table looked at me and laughed. Then one of the other boys walked by and bumped me as I was drinking. He made me spill my drink all over my new shirt. His friends just laughed like the idiots they were. I turned around and punched the kid in the face.
Everyone got up from their seats and chanted "Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! " The boy I hit threw a fist at me and I grabbed it and flipped him over my back. I had taken karate and was a green belt which was third level. After that was over, I was sent to the office and given a week's worth of detention. As I was walking out of the office, I noticed a man trying to hide his face from me. I did catch a glimpse of him though. It was the man in front of me now.
"So I got in a few fights and I cuss, it's not that big a deal." I said after thinking it over.
"It is a big deal and because of it you better get used to the scenery and better learn some respect to those around you. For starters it is polite to call your elders by a proper name. I am Mr. Stillson." he stated, emphasis on Mr..
"Whatever. " I drawled, folding my arms.. I then began to actually take in the appearance of the man. He had green eyes and slicked black hair. At the time my mind only registered my remembrance of his face from school, but now I know I've seen him before.
"That word is very impolite and I never want to hear it from you again." Stillson said.
"I'll use whatever whenever the hell I want." I argued, unfolding my arms and fisting my hands at my sides.
"You're really not grasping the concept here." Stillson almost sighed
"No, I get it, I just don't like ass holes like you trying to control my life."
"Well, maybe no one would have to step in and attempt to control you if you weren't such a misbehaved brat." he said simply. I really couldn't argue with that or even come up with a comeback. I did the only thing my mind could think to do.
"Fuck you!" I yelled.
Stillson's eye lids lowered half way as he took a step toward me.. I didn't back away like I normally would have if approached by someone much bigger than me. I was too angry to show a weakness, or fear for that matter.
"Oh I'm sorry. Did my foul language hurt your feelings." I tensed. He continued to advance toward me and I was getting little afraid of the silence. I was about to say something else when his fist suddenly connected with my stomach.
He pulled his arm back and I fell to the floor, holding my mid-section in agony.
"That mouth of your's will not be tolerated here. I suggest you keep quiet if you have nothing nice to say or your going to be in a lot of pain." he grabbed hold of my hair and pulled me up a little. "Understand? " I nodded slowly, tears running down my face and he dropped me.
"Fucking bastard." I said under my breathe as I attempted to push my self off the ground. Unluckily for me, he heard what I said and before I could take another breathe the back of his hand whipped across my left check, knocking me back to the floor.
