Jacob, 22, Learning Lessons in the Dark

"Our love was never so strong
as the moment it ended."
-Andrew Hudgins

I don't want
to clean up
after a blizzard,
he said.

If it snows, you know,
it will snow all night
and then what?

The problems was
you wanted oranges
not lemons, and you
wanted summer
all year round.

Instead you got me
and a whole lot
of puckering;
instead you got
yellow flesh
and a yard
stained with hoarfrost.

The lesson
to be learned
here
is forgiveness,
Jacob.

You must understand—
that wasn't me,
it was just something
that I did.

But how else would you
have learned?

The leaves grow back every year,
and in the end
you still have
lemons.
