She stares at the TV, watching a child almost her age polishing someone's shoes. He looks scrawny, his poise forced.

She looks away.

Her father squats on the floor, brushing polish over his shoes in quick, elegant strokes. In mere seconds, they transform.

Envy forms a lump in her throat.
