Chapter One – Mates and Dates

"Alright, let's see. Quinsara Lee Marin. Dad, Trevor Marin, and mom, Marcella Ling. I do have to admit, your mother designs beautiful wedding gowns," Mrs. Morrison said as she took her spectacles out and wiped it with a cloth.

"I'll make sure she knows that," I answered, sitting in front of her desk with my arms crossed.

"So, Quinsara, do you know why Ms. Adel sent you here?" she asked.

"Firstly, I would really, really prefer that you call me Sara, and secondly, I think I do know, but I'm not so sure," I answered with a fake smile.

Mrs. Morrison cleared her throat and put her spectacles back on. Her dark red suit made her look like the devil in Prada. Her black hair was tied up in a neat ponytail. She had surprisingly a wrinkle-free face for someone who's turning 35 soon and a principle of a high school.

It must be all that botox injections she's had.

"Alright, Sara. According to Ms. Adel, this is the seventh time you've fallen asleep during her class," she explained.

"Ah, how could I have fallen asleep during such an interesting lesson?" I replied sarcastically.

I may sound rude, but I have a perfect excuse for it. Ms. Adel has never liked me. She despises me because I score good marks in her tests and never listens during her classes. I know she's secretly jealous of me because I have the potential to be smarter than her.

Ha-ha.

I walked out of Mrs. Morrison's office with a week of detention after school. Outside her office was Alex, leaning against the wall listening to his iPod.

"So my dearest friend, what is the verdict?" Alex asked.

"Hmmm. Let's see. A week of detention," I answered, showing him the piece of notice.

"Welcome to the dark side, my friend," Alex joked as we walked away from Mrs. Morrison's office.

"Oh I've always been there," I replied.

After school and detention, Alex drove me home. As usual, there was no one home except the housekeeper, who's probably leaving any second.

I went upstairs to my room and threw my black Billabong backpack beside my closet.

I sat on my bed, waiting for the sound of a door closing.

One, two, three, and the front door of my house closes.

The housekeeper has left the house.

I'd have the house all to myself until around 9 o'clock at night and it was only 3 o'clock.

I changed into my black Louis Vuitton bikini, took my iPod and sunglasses and went to the pool at my backyard.

Ah, nothing like a nice empty pool with clear blue sparkling water. And in the middle of the pool floating freely was the love of my life, my floating mattress where I could lay all day while listening to my music with no one at all to disturb me.

I got in the pool and walked towards my light blue transparent floating mattress, careful not to destroy my iPod and wet my sunglasses, and went on top of it.

Then, I put on my Fendi sunglasses and put on the earphones and the first song that played was 4 am forever by Lost Prophets.

Lost Prophet's 4 am forever is playing on my stereo as I turn the volume higher and higher.

'I just let you slip away,' are the lyrics that played in my mind over and over again. I tried to tell her I was in love with her. I really did.

Maybe it was just the wrong time and the wrong place.

Maybe it was just never meant to be.

After all, I'm just Alex, her best friend. Maybe that's all I'll ever be.

The sun is almost setting and I'm still floating on the pool. I am at peace. There's no one here to…

"Sara!" I heard a voice yell and almost fell off the floating mattress.

I took of my sunglasses and squinted at the girl wearing a mini denim skirt with a black long-sleeve shirt standing by the pool, waving.

"Lydia! How'd you get in?" I asked, paddling nearer to her with my hands.

"I knocked and no one answered. Oh, and your front door wasn't locked," she said with a smile.

Damn that housekeeper. She never locks the door. Someone could suddenly come barging in and rob or kidnap me, or even murder me! Has she ever thought of that?

"Carmen didn't lock the door, again," Lydia said.

I nodded and put my sunglasses back on.

"Come on, we're supposed to meet Alex at Nic's," Lydia said as she helped me get out of the pool.

After I showered and everything else, I slipped on a pair of Levi's denim and a short black Rolling Stones t-shirt, showing a bit of my navel.

Lydia and I both walked to Nic's Coffee Shop which was nearby. We sat at a table beside the glass window, which was where we always sat. Alex was not there yet.

A few minutes later, Alex, dressed in a black long-sleeve button-up shirt with a pair of jeans and a beanie walked in. Lydia waved at him excitedly.

Alex came over and gave Lydia a quick kiss on her lips.

"I still love your piercing," Lydia said, touching the lip ring on the left side of Alex's bottom lip.

"Ew, Lid. Please!" I exclaimed.

"Oh, sorry," Lydia blushed.

I envied Lydia for dating Alex. Yes, I should be ashamed of myself. I should be happy for both my best friends, but there's another side of me secretly hoping that Alex would fall in love with me, or at least someone else would.

I felt like the guiltiest person in the world. Sitting beside me was my girlfriend. I do love her deeply, but the girl with the long brown hair and amazing dark blue eyes sitting in front of me was the girl who stole my heart long ago, long before Lydia came along.

"Oh my goodness! Look who's outside!" Lydia squealed, staring out the glass window.

"No shit!" Sara replied.

I looked out. It was Sophia Carlos, holding a little boy's hand.

Sophia Carlos used to be my ex-girlfriend, until she got pregnant with someone else's child. It was after Sophia that I started falling for Sara. Sara was there for me through my hardest times. Back then, Sara and I were only 15. Sophia was 2 years older than I was. Sara and I met Lydia just last year when we were all 16.

When I met Lydia, I did love her, and I still do, but there's always that someone who will have your heart…
