Sticks and Stones
"Why did you choose me? You can't possibly love me. Is it from pity?" she asked, playing with the lush grass underneath her white gown.
"You know about happy endings, right?"
"What about them?"
"There's always a happy ending."
"So? It could have been your happy ending. You could have had all the happiness in the world if you wanted. You could have been the most powerful sorcerer… and had the woman you love by your side."
He shook his head, leaned back against the gnarled tree trunk.
"I can't regain what's lost. We're two different people than we were back then. It would never have worked… you can never have the same love twice," he said thoughtfully. "I would always want things to be the way they were… and that can never happen. It would spoil the wonderful memories I have of her." He smiled.
"You hurt her, though. You hurt her… for what?"
"For the happy ending."
And with that, he pulled her into his arms. She rested her head against his chest. He laid his head back, letting his unruly black hair blow with the wind. They closed their eyes. This is how they would be for eternity.
