Chapter 2
Cold
Alessandria gazed out of the garage window, oblivious to everything that was going on around her. Jason and Derek were sitting on the couch arguing over why the death of Anna Nicole Smith needed all of the media coverage and so on. I was fooling around on my Sidekick. But she just sat there listlessly. I dawdled on my sidekick for a while longer then stopped and picked up my guitar.
"Okay guys lets get back to work!" I said.
Alessandria jolted up and grabbed her guitar. Her small frame briskly walked over to the mike and switched it on. Jason switched on the amps and rushed to his drum set and took cue.
"What are we doing Spence?" Jason shouted.
I looked at Alessandria she looked back at me. We had always decided, so I thought maybe she would pick out a song this time. She opened her mouth and with a shy quiet voice she answered, "Uhh…maybe we should really practice 'Say What You Are'?"
I nodded
Derek began the opening solo, a high pitched but soft tune, then all at once Alessandria's guitar, my bass, and Jason's guitar came in all-together in tune. Perfectly. Alessandria began to sing with all that she had.
"Why don't you say what you are?
Just say that you're not the same
Did they tell you perfection
Was not a word at all…"
She hit every note and she made it seem like her guitar had a mind of its own.
"That was awesome!" Jason panted, the drumming for the song was crazy, and only he could pull it off.
"Yea, Aless you're pretty damn awesome!" I said.
She smiled, to tired to speak.
"I think we aught to stop for today you guys." I took off my guitar and set it next to the couch in its case.
"Great, see ya tomorrow." Jason said grabbing his skateboard. Derek grabbed his and trailed after. They waved and skated out of the garage, into the pink and orange sunset.
"Aless?" I questioned.
She sat on the couch and strummed.
"Yes?" she replied meekly.
"You okay?" I said sitting next to her
"Yes." She replied. Her eyes not looking at me.
"Okay." I replied.
She then froze looking straight ahead. Before I could ask her what's wrong, she looked down. A tear rolled down her cheek.
"Actually…no." She whimpered. "I'm not okay."
I leaned in to hug her and the tears poured out. As I held her, I could feel her shiver, her body was cold…very cold.
