Princess
She's always wanted to be a princess
She thinks wistfully to herself
As she wiggles into her Cinderella robe,
She's tired of being plain,
Ordinary,
Predictable.
She dreams of glamour,
Riches,
Fame.
Dreams of a chance to stand out
And become different.
Well, tonight is her chance -
Her chance to abandon her usual self,
Her chance to adopt a new identity -
If only for one night.
She turns to the mirror,
And gazes in wonder at her reflection.
Her face covered in powder,
Her lips reddened,
Her eyes shimmering,
Her plastic tiara shining like (real!) silver
The jewels on her dress seem to sparkle
Her mother's (real!) pearl necklace
Hangs heavy 'round her neck.
She's been transformed,
She's a new person -
A princess
She blinks at the reflection,
Hardly recognizing herself
Making sure this is, in fact, real
Confirming this, she beams
A true royal smile
If only for one night
This is her chance to shine.
