Chapter One
I knew that the moment I woke up from yet another night of nightmares and restless sleep that something was going to happen. It was one of those things, a gut feeling that a life changing event-whether good or bad-was going to happen.
The weird thing was, the day started out as normal as it could. My mother came into my room five times to wake me up, but failed every attempt, as usual. As a result, I had to rush to get dressed and eat breakfast before climbing into my car and speeding towards school like every other day. When I got there, I met up with my best friends, Casey and Hannah, and then went to my first class of the day. Again, the beginnings of a normal day.
When lunch rolled around, I had managed to push the anticipation of something happening out of my mind and stole a bunch of fries off of Hannah's lunch tray.
"Hey!" She exclaimed, frowning at me while pulling her long brown hair into a braid.
I just shrugged and nibbled on the greasy, fried potatoes as I studied for my upcoming Calculus test.
"I saw the new kid," Casey said excitedly as she sat down in the seat next to mine. "He's in my English class and a complete fa-reak."
A new kid. In all of my years at Holton High, grades 9-12, there had never been a new kid at school. Holton, Connecticut was a small New England town an hour away from Hartford. It was a picture perfect example of suburbia; a couple houses had even been featured in Architectural Digest. So someone new coming to school, making the population 367, was definitely big news.
"Why's he a freak?" I asked Casey.
She shook her head and prodded the concoction-supposed macaroni and cheese- on her tray. "You just wait until you see him."
So I did wait. After all, Casey's idea of a freak was probably different then mine. The only kind of person that would shock me when they walked through the cafeteria's doors would be a boy wearing a clown suit or something. But whoever this new boy was, he didn't show up. I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed.
"Well," I said to my friends. "I'm going to go to my locker. See you after school." I waited for there good-byes before I left the small room.
The halls were completely empty, which was very strange. There was no one around. And then I started to feel it. Complete, bone chilling cold. Every step I took it grew colder and colder. My arms instinctively wrapped around myself, pressing my books to my chest. I saw what seemed like steam coming out of my mouth. Then I realized it was my breath. And when I turned a corner, the cold grew unbearable and then I saw them.
Two boys: One, Dominic Elias. In our picture perfect town, he was the picture perfect, cliché, school golden boy. His skin was tan and his hair blonde. He was fit and smart and perfect. It was only natural I had a gigantic crush on him since first grade.
He was glaring at the other boy. The obvious new kid. And I could tell why the kids in school would consider him a freak. His clothes were…strange. All black, with a long sleeved tee shirt, hanging over his hands, that was slashed at the top so it hung off on shoulder, exposing stark white skin. His jeans were also black but skin tight with rips and tears all over, chains and cords hanging off of them. He wore clunky combat boots, with the strings untied and dragging on the floor. Next to Dominic he looked…well…dark.
The moment I stepped into the hallway, both boy's head snapped to me and my breathing, which was shallow from the cold, stopped. I was shocked, once again, by Dominic's beauty. But not even he could have distracted me from the new boy. Yes, he too was handsome. Not the same way or level Dominic was, but obviously good looking. That wasn't what caught my attention. His skin, for one, did. White. The whitest, palest skin I had ever seen in my life. And in complete contrast to it, were his eyes. As black as night that caste a shadow over his face.
Fear over took me. There was something not human, not good about that boy. And I needed to get away. My lungs burned and I wheezed from the cold as I walked quickly down the hall, drawing closer to them. By then, it felt like I was being pulled under freezing cold water. My vision became blurry and me legs fought to move. By the time I passed between them, I was ready to pass out.
A hand, as cold as the air, grabbed my wrist.
"Let her go," I heard Dominic say. His voice was warm and as smooth as honey. It was the kind of voice a masseuse should have; calm and had the ability to make you relax.
"She's seen too much," The boy said. His voice was low and husky, not to mention dark. I had never heard such a dark voice before. But what really scared me though was how it was almost…seductive. It would have convinced me to do anything he wanted me to.
Dominic laughed. "She hasn't seen anything. Now let her go."
My head, which was turned down, moved slowly up to see the boy. His gaze was cool and blank. But his eyes…
I let out a scream and tugged my wrist to get away.
"Shut up," The boy hissed and slammed me into his chest. "Shut up you crazy bitch."
In my fear, the screams escaped my mouth and I thrashed against him. My hands grabbed at his long black hair.
"Get her to stop!" I vaguely hear Dominic roar.
The cold metal of the lockers dug into my skin as the boy slammed me against them. His hand, his cold, cold hand, pressed over my mouth and nose so my voice was muffled. Air was quickly leaving my lungs. My vision was blurry and everything sounded far away. I stopped kicking my legs, which were two feet above the floor.
"What's her name?" I could barely hear the boy ask Dominic.
"I would never tell you." Dominic replied.
"Oh? And why is that, Dominic," The other sneered.
I heard Dominic growl. "Her name's Lux Lucifer."
The boy gave a humorless laugh. "Meaning Light?"
"Yes," Dominic said. And the last thing I heard before I slipped into unconsciousness was him growling, "So back off Blake Doyle. She's mine."
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
A/N- So I started this story. Believe it or not, I got inspiration from watching this movie about the book of Revelation (Ya know, in the Bible?) during my religion class. So this is the start of it. It's obviously a fantasy story but isn't over the top. No dragons or wizards or mermaids. Just Dominic, his brother Cyrus, and Blake. You'll find out soon enough what they are. Review please!
