Dream
Written August 2006
The dream was very realistic, in part because of the overwhelming feeling of being towered over which was easily the most affecting emotion in the dream. This city I was in (probably Boston), along with Donny, Nick, and Ethan and the rest; it surrounded us, dwarfed us, and made us feel miniscule. The Main Building which was easily the highest (I don't say town hall or community center or anything because in the dream this was not specified). These massive edifices had to have been at least hundreds of stories high; Main Building being at least 400 stories – and they were incredibly wide also for single structures: being at least 165-185 yards in width.
At the base of Main Building stood our group - just hanging out. We were relaxed, as if we were sedated in some hospital and left to sleep, only we weren't sleeping, we were loitering in front of a big building that otherwise would have made us uncomfortable. The strange thing about the dream was that it had no climax, no rise and fall of emotion. Just simply things that happened to us.
Our topic of conversation was, I believe, baseball. I think this is because I finished reading the novel, "Playing with the Enemy", a story about a boy who has a chance at the major leagues and blows it by breaking his ankle in WWII.
A roaring crash interrupted us and came screeching down, echoing off the other skyscrapers and slamming into us. Looking up, we see the top of Main Building explode thunderously in fire and debris, with windows blowing out and glass shards racing for the ground. Several stories at a time blew and sped to reach the street below.
Dazedly, we scamper across the street to get away from the shattering shards, still in that sedated state. When we turn the corner into the adjacent block, we run into fire.
A massive wall of flame greets us warmly and welcomes us into its home and hearth. The inferno was as wide as the street itself. Nearly scorched head-to-toe, we try to run to the next street. Oddly enough, we aren't affected as one would think, just singed. Again, exploding fire throws us back, denying our entry. The flame comes out of nowhere, just all at once and everywhere, it explodes in the street. The dream allows me a bit of insight, 'saying' that the flame from the streets have come from the top of the other Buildings. They too were being destroyed.
Finally, we realize that nowhere we go is safe and that all the streets are deathtraps if we run into them. We return to the Main Building, and to our doom. It comes crashing down on us, hundreds of thousands of pounds of steel and fire, bearing down on us, trapping us and destroying us. We are no more and I wake up.
A lot of things don't make any sense here, but that is why it was a dream, I suppose…
