Fragile Existence

A slender light brown hand hung out from under the brightly colored comforter, which was illuminated by the morning light that had managed to pass through the black curtain over the window.

As the incessant beeping of an alarm clock rang out in the silent room, the hand twitched, and the comforter moved revealing a head of curly black hair belonging to a girl who's hand immediately reached over to silence the alarm clock. She fumbled for the snooze button and groaned as the beeping got louder disturbing her deep state of unconsciousness. Kenadia sat up wearily, and slowly brushed the sleep from her eyes. She glanced around the room searching for the source of the annoying beeping, and found it under her comforter, she smacked the box shaped object until the noise ceased then stood and stumbled toward the bathroom that was located on the other side of the room.

A while later she reemerged, wrapped in a fluffy black towel and began to pull on some clothes, a pair of black skinny jeans which had previously been crumpled in the corner of her room, along with a black tank top and light blue jacket that she had pulled from a dirty clothes basket completed her outfit. Then with a tired look in the mirror she proceeded to do her hair, and pull on the neon blue headband that had been in her bed near a large lump in the comforters, which she pulled back to reveal a handsome boy.

"Hey" She said softly, as she nudged the sleeping figure. "Get up Alberto, come on we got school."

The boy groaned and moved slightly, wrapping his arm around Kendaia's waist. "Come back to bed baby." He said as he pulled her onto the bed. "Who cares about school?" He said, softly into the crook of her neck. She rolled her eyes and extracted herself from his grip.

"Alberto, get up now 'cuz I got a killer hangover and I need some of my hangover remedy, which I can't get until I go to school." She smacked him and stood out of his reach, causing him to tumble to the floor.

"Fine I'll get up." He said, as he pulled himself from the floor and trudged towards the bathroom.

Kenadia grinned as she watched him walk to her bathroom, then grabbed an old starbucks cup from the floor and glanced through the small opening before chugging the remains and settling down to wait.

Kenadia maneuvered the sports car to fit within the small parking space, and grinned at Alberto, whose normally dark face had paled at the prospect of his beloved car being destroyed by the overly excited girl. She pulled the keys from the ignition and placed them in his lap before fluidly exiting the car and greeting her friends who had since flocked around the car. Alberto on the other hand, remained in the car until he was sure he could exit without dropping to the floor with shock, but he emerged in time to hear the end of the girl's conversation.

"So was he good?" A blond girl asked.

Kenadia rolled her eyes. "Sophia you are so weird just go away." She turned towards Alberto who had circled the car to hug her quickly. "Bye babe." He said sadly. "I gotta go, but I'll bring your car around so you can get home later, Okay?"

She stood on her toes to whisper in his ear. "That's fine, and are we on for tonight or do you have to go back to Emily?" He returned the favor by lightly nibbling on her neck before whispering back. "Not tonight tomorrow."

"In that case." She smiled and kissed him slowly, ignoring the cheers and whistles from her friends. "See ya tonight baby." She kissed him again and waved to him as she strode off to her first class, with a group of her friends following, eager to hear of her nighttime affairs.

A slim girl with a mass of straight black hair opened the window of her apartment and leaned out only to light a cigarette and turn back inside, leaving the hand holding it outside. She glanced at the large TV in the room, then at the man sitting in the couch who was staring intently at her.

"What is it?" She asked indignantly, revealing her thick English accent. "My bloody fag's hangin' out th' window like you asked." The man's face betrayed little emotion as he stood and plucked a beer can from the table. The girl cringed and readied herself for the blow, but it never came. Instead the man's booming voice rang out.

"Aemilia. I told you about the parties, and the smoking and the drugs."

"Oh dad, you ol' daftie. Mum let me do it all th' time. She actually joined me on a few occasions. Maybe if you tried it you wouldn't be so uptight." She smiled sweetly him before sticking her head out the window to take another drag.

"I don't care young lady!" He bellowed. "I will not have you smoking in my presence."

Aemilia rolled her eyes. "Daddy, we live in France, not smoking here is like not, not having a period if you're a woman." She shrugged nonchalantly. "Besides tu ne parle pas français. You can't go anywhere without me, unless you want to get lost so we have got to stick together." She grinned as his face turned an interesting shade of purple. "Well papa. I'm off au revoir." She withdrew her hand and let her cigarette to fall to the ground, only to light a new one inside of the apartment and take a drag, leaving the apartment shrouded in a cloud of smoke.

Aemilia slowly walked through the streets of Paris, as she tried not to wobble on the three-inch stilettos she had borrowed from her friend. She ignored the desperate stares of the drunken French men and shook her hair elegantly to distract attention away from the minuscule piece of fabric that made up her dress.

"Dammit! Aelin, you didn't tell me how hard it was to walk in these!" She screeched into the small cell phone that she had attached to her ear. "But who cares, what's the name of the club again?" Her friends voice was lost in the pulsating beat that seemed to drift from an apartment above her where a drunken teenager leaned from a window to retch on the ground three stories below. Aemilia moved as quickly as she could to avoid the foul looking substance and narrowly dodged it before tripping on a curb. "Bloody Hell. Hold on Aelin, what's the name again?" She deciphered the name and nodded at the phone. "Okay, thanks Aelin, its on Champs right?" She stood again and began moving forward on her heels. "Alright be there in five minutes, yea, I'm on Rue de Berri by the Hustler club. Ohh its right there, alright I got it. Bye." She strode past the strip club, ignoring the catcalls coming from inside and dodging the drunken men who had begun to pee on the sidewalk. Then glanced at the Impala Lounge where groups of drunken people had started dancing to bad songs from the 90's, and turned the corner to reach the entrance of the Queen club where she spotted Aelin in a pair of stilettos similar to the ones she had on and a Gothic Lolita inspired skirt with a lacy pink bra.

"Aelin hunny, what happened to your shirt?" She asked as she embraced the girl.

"Oh well I was dancing, and sweating, and a hot guy offered to take if off for me, so I let him." Aelin said happily. Aemilia laughed at her friend's stupidity and grabbed her arm.

"Let's go in shall we?" Aelin nodded happily and they both stepped up to the bouncers who glared at them and motioned for them to go to the end of the line. Until they both looked at him pleadingly, while smiling sweetly at him. The bouncer a good look at the two girls whose looks rivaled top models and grinned stupidly as he waved them in.

"Merci beau." Aelin said playfully as she looked him up and down feigning interest. Aemilia rolled her eyes and dragged her into the club. "Come on time to party."

Kenadia sat in her Psychology class and sighed at the stupidity of the T.A. who had just said that Narcissism meant that someone hated him or herself too much, or believed they were hated. She stood to correct the woman quickly. "Excuse me, but if I remember my Greek Mythology correctly, then that means, Narcissus - son of the river god - hated himself, though his story states other wise."

"Ahh, we have one who doubts my teachings. What is Narcissism then, according to your myth's?" The T.A. smirked at her, as if waiting for her to back down, in response Kenadia grinned and continued with her earlier point.

"Well, according to the Greek myths, Narcissus fell in love with his image, which had been reflected in the pond he had been about to drink from. Though admittedly, a curse had been placed upon him, because he had rejected the nymph Echo, though his curse was that he was doomed to fall in love with the one thing he could not gain. Which turned out to be his reflection."

The T.A smiled at her and flipped the board behind her over to reveal a large ornate sign that read 'Pop Quiz Today' "Congratulations Mrs. Kenadia you just aced the pop quiz!" The girl raised her eyebrows in surprise. "Cool pop quiz." She said loudly before muttering quietly to herself. "Of course it's no surprise that I know Greek Mythology so well. I practically come from that era anyway." The T.A had begun to yell at her to claim a prize, and she walked down from the top row of the classroom quickly. Once she had reached the bottom the woman hugged her and handed her a box of cupcakes, which were immediately pulled from her hands by the other students who had run from their seats at the sight of food. Yet amidst all the frenzy stood a man, he flitted towards Kenadia and with a feral smile spoke in a voice to low and fast for the people in the room to pick up.

"Hello my little Kenadia, I've found you at last." His smile lengthened as her gold-green eyes widened in recognition, and fear.

"Erasmus." She whispered inaudibly. Kenadia stared at him, the man she had not seen for over a hundred years, until he flickered in her eyesight and disappeared. She bit her lip and turned away from the door in which he had been, and began to rack her mind for a plan.

Aemilia moved to the pulsating beat that was emitted from the speaker near her face. She had lost Aelin hours ago, but continued to flirt with all the cute guys in the club, as well as dance with them and was currently attempting to get one of the cute, now drunk guys off of her so that she could find her friend. She eased herself away from the man she was dancing with, whispering a promise of her return in his ear, and traveled to the bar. She nodded to the bartender, and patted the bar in a silent question. When he nodded she hoisted herself onto the bar and searched the crowd for Aelin, until she found her dancing between two guys in the center of the dance floor. She rolled her eyes wearily and had started to lower herself from the bar when the man she had just left grabbed her ankle and hauled her down.

"Ish thoug uhoo wer a gonna com back to me?" He slurred. Aemilia stared at him n confusion, attempting to understand the drunken man, then slapped him in an effort to get him to remove his lips from her neck.

"Get the fuck off me!" She screeched at him, attracting the attention of Aelin, who had made her way to the bar so she could find Aemilia. Aelin walked towards the man and hauled him backwards, pausing only to slap him, before rushing to her friend.

"Are you okay Aemi?" Aelin said worriedly. Aemilia smiled ruefully at her, and responded. "I was just a bit surprised is all, I'm fine." She shrugged. "Besides I was trying to find you so we could get out anyway, these guys are seriously nasty, and I'm pretty sure a couple of them are over there, like, screwing in the corner." Aelin's eyes widened.

"Oooh that sounds hot, are they emo?" She asked excitedly. Aemilia rolled her eyes in response.

"No they aren't, so lets go." She stood up shakily on her stilettos and strutted – as well as one can with three daiquiris in their system - towards the door with a very confused Aelin following.
