Chapter 3: Meet the Neighbours

'He's so-ugh!-I can't believe him!-'

'Nev.'

'He's so-ugh!-I HATE him!-'

'Nev!'

'And-he blackmailed me!'

'NEV!' I turned to face Glade, who was sitting at the back of the car.

'What?' I snapped.

'What and who are you talking about?' Glade asked. I heaved a sigh and scowled darkly, slouching on my seat and crossing my arm over my chest.

'Well, that certainly didn't get her talking.' Emily said from beside me. I turned to give her a death glare. She only smirked when she saw this.

'Seriously Nev, I don't think I've ever seen you this worked up.' Glade commented, concern on his face. Emily nodded in agreement.

'It must be some guy if he got you this worked up.' Nev said.

'How do you know that he's a guy?' I asked.

'Well, I could make out something from all your blabbering…other than the 'ugh!'.' I gave her a dark look and scowled at the windscreen.

'Come on Nev, tell us what's up! We can help.' Glade said.

'Oh, fine!' I gave in. It was hard to say no to Glade. 'It's Paul!' At this, Glade's face brightened.

'Really? What happened? Did you talk to him? I can't believe you had the pleasure to talk to Paul Freeman!' Glade exclaimed brightly.

'Am I missing something here? Who the hell is Paul Freeman?' Emily asked from beside me, a frown forming on her lips.

'Well, Paul Freeman is the new kid…the guy we're trying to get to turn gay…so that Glade can have him.'

'Oh! So that's why Glade is so happy at the mention of the kid's name. But why has he got you all worked up?'

'Well, he just so happens to be in my chemistry class.' I spat out angrily.

'You're so lucky!' Glade gushed.

'Glade, I realise how excited you are about having one of your best friends in the same class with the love of your life and having a chance of actually talking to the love of your life but could you please let Neva tell us why that boy has her worked up.'

'Fine, spill Nev.' Glade motioned me to hurry up with his hands.

'Ok, so he's in my chemistry class…and he…well,' I heaved a sigh. 'Em, do you remember Friday, when I had to, well, kiss that guy on that dare?'

'Well, of-'

'You did WHAT?' Glade shouted from the back. I turned to look at him with a raised eyebrow.

'It's no big deal Gladwyne.' I said with a sweet smile. Glade glared at me.

'You kissed a random guy? He could have been a murderer! Or-or a rapist!' Emily glanced at me with an amused look before returning back to concentrate on her driving.

'Gladwyne, I'm flattered that you care and all, but I can take care of myself.' Glade frowned at this.

'Yeah, but what would you have done if it was a rapist or a murderer? And don't call me Gladwyne.' I rolled my eyes.

'Gladwy-'

'Alright guys! We're here!' Emily exclaimed brightly, climbing out of the car and skipping inside the ice-cream parlour. Glade and I shared an amused look. Emily and skipping…hmm…

'What happened to Emily?' I asked. Glade shrugged.

'I'm freaked out.' He said with a whimper. I patted his head in a maternal way and followed Emily inside with Glade trailing behind.

Emily was already seated in a booth, with a bright smile on her face. I slipped into a seat and Glade seated beside me.

'So, continue, what does Paul have to do with Friday night?' Emily asked. A small blush appeared on my cheeks.

'Um…see…Paul is the guy I kissed on Friday.' I mumbled. Emily's jaw dropped open as she stared wide-eyed at me.

'You kissed Paul Freeman?' Glade asked. 'Oh my god! You're so lucky!'

'Hardly,' I muttered. 'But…I don't think he recognises me.' Emily continued to gape so I gave her a deathly glare to get her back to normal. It seemed to work.

'But-but…wow!' Emily said. 'Who would have thought?'

'I know.' I mumbled.

'So…that's why he has you all worked up?' Emily asked. I shook my head.

'Not exactly,' I replied. 'Ok, so since we were all already paired off, Paul had to go in a three…and Ms. Hatton decided to put Paul with Aaron and me.'

'You're so lucky Nev.' Glade said with a grin.

'Well, so Aaron was really getting on my nerves so I decided to…you know, do something about it.' An evil grin lit up my face and Emily shook her head.

'You didn't Neva.' She muttered. I only grinned wider.

'So I spilled harmful chemicals all over his hands…' I drifted off, having a flashback on the look on Aaron's face.

'Nev, you rock! I hope you know that.' Glade said.

'I believe I am quite aware of how much I rock.' I replied with a grin.

'Why oh why am I stuck with these two idiots!' Emily said, looking up at the ceiling.

'I don't think the ceiling can answer that Em.' Glade said, looking up to examine the ceiling whilst Emily glared at Glade.

'So anyway,' I said, trying to get the attention of my two friends. 'Apparently Paul saw me do this and now he's blackmailing me!'

'That jackass!' Emily exclaimed.

'Hey! You don't even know him...maybe he's just trying to fit into the school.' Glade said. Emily and I looked at him as if he were insane.

'Or not…' Glade added.

'What did he want?' Emily asked.

'He said he'll think about it,' I said. 'I can't stand him. Glade, do you think we can find another love?'

'Hey! If we continue project GSGTTGDT on him, he might get scared enough to…well, go away, and then you don't have to worry about him bothering you anymore.' Emily suggested. My face immediately lit up.

'Emily, I love you!' I exclaimed.

'Sorry darling, I don't roll that way.' Emily smirked. I rolled my eyes.

'Now are we going to have some ice-cream or what?' I asked.

'But-but then what about me?' Glade asked with a pout.

'Don't worry Gladey; he might just fall for you.' Emily said. Glade rolled his eyes.

'Whose turn is it to pay?' he asked.

'I'm not paying!' Both Emily and I exclaimed loudly. Glade grumbled an inaudible reply and got up to get us ice-creams.

'I love torturing that boy!' Emily exclaimed as soon as Glade was out of earshot.

'I just love that boy all around.' I said with a grin.

'Neva!' my little sister, Taliae, exclaimed as soon as I had opened the door to the house.

'Hey kid,' I said, ruffling her hair and stepping into the house. 'Where is everyone?'

'Well, dad called and said that he was going to be late coming home and mom is in the kitchen, baking for the new neighbours.'

'New neighbours?' I questioned.

'Yeah!' Taliae said excitedly. 'I can't wait to meet them! Mom said that you and I can go and welcome them to the neighbourhood.'

'Well, that ought to be fun.' I muttered sarcastically to myself. Heaving a sigh, I dropped my bag in a corner and hurried into the kitchen.

'Mom! I can't welcome the neighbours because I have thi-'

'You're not getting away this time Neva,' mom said. 'I can see right through your lie.'

'But mom!' I whined.

'Look at you Neva, acting like a little child, even Taliae is better than you,' mom said. 'Now go and change, I made some brownies for the new neighbours.' I groaned and trudged up the stairs. I went inside my room and opened up my wardrobe grabbing a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Hurriedly putting them on, I glanced at myself at the mirror. Heaving another sigh at the sight of my messy hair, I picked up a hairbrush and ran it through my hair before going back down the stairs again.

'You wore something very similar to that to school.' Mom said with a disapproving frown after looking me up and down.

'Mom, I'm going to welcome the neighbours, not to a-a fancy party.' I replied with a roll of my eyes.

'First impressions are very important.' My mom insisted.

'I'm not going to become best friends with the neighbours mom.' I said. Mom sighed in defeat.

'Well fine, get going now, Taliae has the brownies. She's waiting outside.' Mom told me.

'Great!' I exclaimed with mock enthusiasm which earned me a small glare from mom. I rolled my eyes and went outside.

'You ready?' Taliae asked. 'Let's go!' I shook my head and followed Taliae up the driveway and inside the open gates of the house beside ours. I rang the doorbell and Taliae and I waited. Only moments later, footsteps were heard approaching towards the door.

'Hey! Welcome to the neighbourhood! We're the Morrisons. I'm Taliae and this is-' Taliae stopped talking when she caught sight of me gaping at the person at the door with wide eyes.
