INT. CLINIC WAITING ROOM – MONDAY AFTERNOON

James is in the clinic with Alexis. She is gripping his hand tightly.

ALEXIS

What if…

(She shakes her head)

Okay, let's not think about it.

JAMES

What if what?

ALEXIS

I mean, what if it's bad?

JAMES

I don't think it will be. I mean, there are hardly any symptoms. It will be okay.

ALEXIS

But worst case scenario – what if it IS bad?

JAMES

Then we'll just take it in our stride.

ALEXIS

This is taking so long.

JAMES

Just relax okay? Everything is going to be alright.

ALEXIS

I'm sure you must be sick of saying that right now.

JAMES

It just rolls off the tongue.

The nurse enters the room and both of them jump to their feet.

NURSE

The doctor will see you now.

DOCTOR'S ROOM – CONTINUOUS

DOCTOR

Ah, Alexis, right?

ALEXIS

Yes, that's right.

JAMES

How is it?

DOCTOR

Well, the lab results are out, and there's nothing much. T4 levels are on the upper boundary, which shows why you do have some hyper symptoms. However, it's still within the safe range. I'd recommend you do nothing in the mean time. Just eat healthily, take more rest and don't get stressed out.

(He looks pointedly at James)

Come back for another test in maybe six month's time. If you still have symptoms.

JAMES

What sort of symptoms should she be looking out for?

DOCTOR

Shaking hands, palpitations… severe fatigue. Weight fluctuations. It would most probably be a loss in your case, but you could be gaining on the other hand.

JAMES

Alright, thanks, doc.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE CLINIC – CONTINOUS

Alexis and James get into the car.

ALEXIS

That's good news, I suppose.

JAMES

Told you, babe. Don't worry so much. Stress levels, remember?

ALEXIS

Yes, yes.

(She takes out her hand phone and dials Cedric's number)

Ceddy, It's all okay. Yeah, I know it's great. Bye.

INT. COLLEGE CANTEEN – AFTERNOON

Alexis and James are in the canteen. Jasmine and Cedric pass by whispering in a huddle.

ALEXIS

Has there been something on between Jasmine and Cedric lately?

JAMES

Not that I've heard of. Why?

ALEXIS

They're always together lately.

JAMES

Not a bit jealous are you, babe?

ALEXIS

(Laughing shortly)

No.

(Sees James' sceptical look)

Well maybe a little.

JAMES

I'm hurt.

ALEXIS

Mez…

JAMES

Joking, babe. What do you want to do for your birthday on Friday?

ALEXIS

I don't know. I haven't planned anything.

JAMES

There's a new joint in town. Spice. Are you interested?

ALEXIS

(Shrugging)

Wouldn't hurt to try.

JAMES

It's a date then?

ALEXIS

Don't you dare rain-check on me, okay?

JAMES

I won't.

ALEXIS

Sure?

JAMES

Promise.

INT. JAMES' LIVING ROOM – EVENING

James and Heather are sitting on the couch, talking.

JAMES

Frankly, Heath, I'm worried.

HEATHER

What about? Alexis?

JAMES

I… I guess it's the whole relationship game.

HEATHER

It isn't exactly a game.

JAMES

I don't mean that… I mean… We've reached this point now, where it's really make or break. I admit, I made a lot of mistakes. But…

HEATHER

Everyone makes mistakes, James. That's a given in life.

JAMES

I just don't want it to be… like… you know…

HEATHER

You're afraid of a break up?

JAMES

I'm not exactly afraid of a break up. What I'm really afraid of is if we do go on. Will forever really last? I know I said a lot of things. And I do mean them. At least, I do now. I'm just afraid… afraid that…

HEATHER

Are you thinking of dad and what he did?

JAMES

(He lets out a sigh)

Something like that. It's not that I'm afraid that we'll break up now. It was really difficult not growing up with a dad. I don't want to visit the same situation on my kids. If I do have kids. I'm afraid that even if we work it out, what if we still… divorce later on?

HEATHER

You have to make up your mind. Choose to stay. I don't think that there's anything that you can't actually work out if you give it enough time and effort. Don't worry about it, kid. Cross that bridge only if you come to it. Think about all the millions of marriages that have made it right to the end.

JAMES

But what if it's genetic?

HEATHER

Is it?

(James shrugs.)

Anyway, I do want to meet her, you know. So does mom.

James mom, who is passing by the door looks in.

JAMES' MOM

So does mom what?

HEATHER

Really, really want to meet Alexis.

JAMES' MOM

Yes. Dinner. Tomorrow. Make sure you ask her.

JAMES

Alright, mom. I will.

(He rolls his eyes)

INT. COLLEGE CLASSROOM – AFTERNOON

The class has ended. Most of the other students have left. Jasmine and Trixie are already walking out the door. James is talking to Alexis.

JAMES

For real. Tonight. Can you make it?

ALEXIS

But it's so sudden! I don't know. I just think it might be awkward.

JAMES

Come on. You've met my mom before. And Heather's a gem. Please, please, please? It will make us all awfully happy. And get them off my back. They've been bugging me for ages!

ALEXIS

Oh, alright, I guess.

JAMES

I'll see you then.
