a new york midnight
31 august 2007

midnight in new york city(taxicabs honking,
crowds filing)
dark alleys feel the rumble of subway trains:
"how unsettling to feel the earth move underneath"

the girl I was once, in pink tulle
(with a sentimental streak)
dreamed of living here(& here I am in the city
of hustlebustle can'tstopmoving mustgetsomewherebiggerbetter)

dreamers come here, but I don't belong:
my dream is of love, not romance.

(I want truth, not façades)

it's midnight(streetlights, do you yearn for stars?)
I'm eager to catch a jet, to search in some other place;

& to think—it's early morning in Paris
