Together Forever, Until the End

A/N: I hope you like it. This is my first one shot and, funnily enough, my first completed story! Just a suggestion but if you listen to the song this story is based around, it really helps set the mood.
Please review! I'll love you forever! Enjoy.
FYI the rulers (lines across the screen) separate the present from Jamie's flashbacks and the words in italics are lyrics.

Disclaimer: I do not own the lyrics in this story. The song is Goodbye my Lover by James Blunt.

Jamie sank down into his bed and lifted his guilty brown eyes to meet hers. She stared out at him with laughing eyes from her frame on his nightstand table. He stretched one hand out to delicately place the frame down. He couldn't meet her gaze, not now, not today. "I should be going to see her today," he thought with more guilt.

Did I disappoint you, or let you down?
Should I be feeling guilty, or let the judges frown?

He remembered the first time he had met her, he spotted her when she walked into a café that he frequently occupied. Something about her had instantly drawn him towards her.

"Hi, my name is Jamie. Would you be interested in some company?"

"Well hello Jamie. I'm Maria. I would be delighted to have some company."

They had hit it off instantly; it was one of those things that had seemed destined to occur.

Cause I saw the end before we'd begun,
Yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I had won.

One of Jamie's favourite memories sprang into action in his mind.

"Jamie!" Maria squealed, "Jamie! Stop for a minute!" They had been running through the rain, newspapers held above their heads as makeshift umbrellas. Jamie stopped halfway up his driveway and turned to look at her. She smiled and lowered her newspaper. She tilted her head upwards and laughed as she started spinning around in the rain. Jamie smiled tenderly at her. She was so beautiful, with her dripping wet hair and her clothes plastered tightly against her body. He dropped his newspaper onto the ground and walked up to Maria. He wrapped his arms around her and lowered his lips to hers…

So I took what's mine by eternal right,
Took your soul out into the night.

Just as a smile touched Jamie's lips, another memory squirmed its way into his mind and wiped the smile clean off of his face.

He had woken up only seconds ago and was instantly greeted by excruciating pain. He kept screaming out, "Maria! Maria! Where's Maria? Maria!" A nurse walked up to him with a look of sorrow in her eyes and Jamie felt the bile begin to rise in the back of his throat.

It may be over but it won't stop there,
I am here for you if you'd only care.

Jamie stared blankly up at his ceiling, wishing the pain to stop. He knew that it wouldn't. It never had, and it never would.

She had made him a better person; he had loved her so dearly. She had been his world.

You touched my heart you touched my soul,
You changed my life and all my goals.
And love is blind but that I knew
And my heart was blinded by you.

She had completed him in every possible way. She had been the most caring person he had ever known and he had loved her so passionately.

Visions of Maria and himself together physically crossed his mind and made him long for her touch all the more.

I've kissed your lips and held your head,
Shared your dreams and shared your bed.

He thought he caught a whiff of her scent and his eyes shot open. He glanced about his room hopefully, knowing that it couldn't possibly be her; that his mind was just playing cruel tricks on him again. He closed his eyes once more and saw her smiling face, how he longed to see her smile once more.

I know you well,
I know your smell.
I've been addicted to you.

He refused to say goodbye. Goodbye sounded too final. He knew that he would see her again, if not on this earth, then on another. They would be together forever, until the end. The end could not have possibly come yet; he would not allow it.

Goodbye my lover,
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one,
You have been the one for me.
Goodbye my lover,
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one,
You have been the one for me.

Jamie opened his eyes, he did not want to fall asleep and be plagued by nightmares. He knew eventually he would have to sleep, but he liked to postpone it as long as possible. The nightmares took hold of him and tortured him every time he slept. He supposed that it was his punishment. And it was punishment that was well deserved.

I am a dreamer and when I wake,
You can't break my spirit, it's my dreams you take.

His eyes watered as he thought about what he did and he whispered in a choked voice, "Maria, wherever you are, please forgive me. Please forgive me and remember me always. I will never forget you for as long as I live."

And as you move on remember me,
Remember us and all we used to be.

As tears rolled down Jamie's face he thought of Maria and the times that she had shed tears for him. He wished that he had never made her cry. He wished that he had never caused her pain. He wished that she had always felt as peaceful as she looked when she slept. She never deserved to hurt. She had deserved better than him, and yet she had chosen to be with him.

I've seen you cry, I've seen you smile,
I've watched you sleeping for a while.

He remembered that day, that fateful day when everything had gone so terribly wrong. He still didn't understand how it had gone so wrong when their day had started out so well.

They had been at a park, eating a picnic lunch when all throughout the park you heard cries of, "Oh yes Jamie! Yes! I will marry you! Oh Jamie I love you!" Jamie had thought that would be the happiest day of his life. Oh how wrong he had been.

I'd be the father of your child,
I'd spend a lifetime with you.

She had meant the world to him; he didn't know how he was still living. He couldn't remember what life had been like before he had met her. Had he even had a life before Maria?

I know your fears and you know mine.
We've had our doubts but now we're fine.
And I love you; I swear that's true.
I cannot live without you.

The image that haunted his nightmares played itself in his mind. Everything seemed slowed down and though that moment in time had lasted only a few brief seconds, it seemed to last a lifetime to Jamie.

He saw himself driving back home with Maria, back to their home after their picnic. He saw himself looking over to his right, over to see his fiancé laughing in the passenger seat. Usually he couldn't take his eyes off of her, but in that moment she seemed invisible. His eyes would only allow him to look past her, out of her window, at the truck speeding towards them. He didn't even have time to react before everything went black.

Goodbye my lover,
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one,
You have been the one for me.
Goodbye my lover,
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one,
You have been the one for me.

He seemed in a trance as he opened his eyes to see Maria lying next to him, holding his hand. His heart sped up and tears welled in the corners of his eyes. "I miss you so much," he managed to choke out.

Maria smiled at him and brushed a hand through his hair, "I miss you too."

He blinked and then she was gone. A sob escaped his throat; it had just been a dream. It had seemed so real, but it couldn't have been. Maria was gone, and she wasn't coming back home to him.

And I still hold your hand in mine, in mine when I'm asleep.
And I will bear my soul in time, when I'm kneeling at your feet.

She had passed away three months ago. He felt as if he was never going to heal, never going to be whole again. How could he be? She had completed him; he would never be whole again.

Goodbye my lover,
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one,
You have been the one for me.
Goodbye my lover,
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one,
You have been the one for me.

He was an empty, hollow shell of the man he used to be. He would never be the same again because he had lost a part of himself when Maria died. When Maria died, his heart had accompanied her to the other side. At least she wasn't completely alone.

I'm so hollow baby,
I'm so hollow.
I'm so, I'm so, I'm so hollow.
I'm so hollow baby,
I'm so hollow.
I'm so, I'm so, I'm so hollow.

Jamie moaned in agony and thought, "Oh Maria, why couldn't it have been me? Why did it have to be you? You didn't deserve this. I can't bear living without you. Why didn't you take me with you?"

Jamie blinked back tears as he whispered, "Why Maria? Why?"
